  1. #1 Can A PS2 Play Copied DVDs?

I have a PS2 slimline; I burned a film I got off the internet to a DVD+RW. I tried it on my PS2 and it plays it fine apart from its in black and white, whereas it should be in colour. I tried it on my brothers normal PS2 (not a slimline) and it wouldn't even read the disc. So what I want to know is can a PS2 play a copied DVD? I try playing it on a normal DVD and it works fine. Could it be the program I used to burn the movie to DVD with? Can anyone also recommend some good DVD burning software (so I can download movies and put them onto a DVD)?

    Thanks

Yes it can, I think the problem you're having with "black and white, whereas it should be in color" is the fact that your movie was most likely in PAL format and you're playing it on an NTSC system. They are NOT compatible.

Your movie needs to be converted, on a PC, from PAL to NTSC and THEN burned to the Playstation 2.

I've been using a combination of TMPGENC and Nero Vision Express to create my homebrew DVDs, however. Converting AVIs to DVD with TMPGENC and then Nero Vision to prepare the menus and burn.

When you convert an AVI to DVD format, you MUST take into the fact that a TV includes overscan. When converting my AVIs, I tell TMPGENC to resize the video to 640x352 centered but set the DVD resolution to 704x480. It fits the image perfectly on the TV then.

Thanks for reminding me about the PAL/NTSC thing I actually had it set on NTSC when it needed to be PAL. It all works in fine colour now on my slimline. But my brothers PS2 (the original model) won't even read the disc? Can the old PS2 not play them?

    Thanks

Use S-video connector to your TV and you will see the colors.

if you have problems in DVD+R/RW media you may also try setting the booktype to -rom using the appropriate software. This increases compatibility...

My V5 reads movies on +RW just fine (also -RW works but it seriously beats the laser so it's really not worth the risk). Still, I've seen one almost brand new V7 that reads +/-R just fine but no +/-RW no matter what.
