Videomode problem –
07-06-2005,06:31 PM
I have a PAL PS2 and multisystem TV. The picture seems squashed a little ... you know... black borders... thats why I always prefer NTSC games. It would be very nice to have options for switching PAL/NTSC.
Looks like everybody loves that NON_INTERLACED videomode very much. NeoGeoCD, SNES station and PGEN uses it. I hate it. Half of the scanlines are completely black. It looks especially ugly when using RGB cable and TV produces a sharp image. Please, evilo, tell me the secret !
Why this NON_INTERLACED videomode was chosen by You? I just need to know the reasons (+50% FPS, -50% videomemory maybe ? ), because so many games was spoiled by this effect (ICO, Burnout, La Pucelle etc.). Is it possible to have a option "NON_INTERLACED/INTERLACED videomode" in order to have solid, PSX-like picture?

PAL/NTSC is cool !
But You didnt answered my second question!
Please, tell me the reason for using NON_INTERLACED videomode! I just need to know!

"Please, tell me the reason for using NON_INTERLACED videomode! I just need to know!"
It flickers a lot less and the original consoles output ran in low res/non-interlaced so its closer to how it originally looked.I generally prefer non-interlaced ouput but I admit I have not tried any of the ps2 emulators as of yet.On the xbox, everything is interlaced and it looks terrible.Especially when the flicker-filters are enabled to the max level (which is the default),which makes everything look blurry and still flickers more than non-interlaced mode.

as darklegion told it, first because it's closer to the original video mode (neocd doesn't have an interlaced mode), and then most of all to avoid flickering, that I personnally find ugly and tiring for the eyes... I don't think anyway that I will add an interlaced mode option, as i don't think it's really necessary, and switching to NTSC should give you a full solid image as you're expecting.
see you !

Well, swithing to NTSC will give fullscreen, but NOT solid image
The black spaces between scanlines will be even wider (sorry for my poor English). Flickering will be reduced in noninterlaced mode, I know that, but is PSX picture looks so bad and flickering to You? Are You using RGB cable or standart video output (it will explain alot, because noninterlaced mode was OK for me, when I was using my old small and blurry TV with standart video cable)?
"I don't think anyway that I will add an interlaced mode option, as i don't think it's really necessary" - umm, what can I say ...
looks like I`m the only person who considers its necessary. Imho, it would be cool to have an external config file with such internal options (videomode=NTSC, interlaced=ON), burned on CD with emulator.
P.S. I know, I`m asking too much... but could You compile PGEN emulator for me? I downloaded the sources and compiler, changed NON_INTERLACED videomode to INTERLACED (because it really hurts my eyes, I even started to use squashed PAL image) and it wont compile
so many errors and warnings...

I already re-compiled PGEN some times ago (just for fun) as I wanted to make a free open source version equivalent to the MAX EVO edition, but then lost interest. Anyway, it seems that the source available are not the one corresponding to the last public build (even seems one version further), and some things are a bit strange, for i.e. one method used in GSlib is not available in the last public GSLib version. However once recompiled I got it running slower than the last public binary. But I must admit that I didn't spent much more time on it (following migration from ps2lib to ps2sdk) to check compilation flags, etc...
