So I read about someone that wired up a battery to their DVD-ROM drive motor in order to open it instead of using a swap card/knife trick. Sounded sweet, but someone else reported that it basically fried their opening mech on their drive. I set out to improve on it and have come up with what I believe is a safe method. What I basically did was wire up a DPDT switch so I could use it for both opening and closing. I also wired a small relay in line with one of the motors connections to the PS2 board so when I turn on the switch, it breaks the connection of the motor to the circuit board, while allowing the motor to get juice from 2 AA batteries. While I'm not sure if it is nessacasry to prevent sening 3 volts back to the circuit boad, I'm just trying to be safe. So far it works pretty sweet but I have yet to hook it up and test it with the PS2 on. Keep ya posted

Good to hear, the reason it fried my ps2 was due to the guy giving out the wrong points. I would appreciate it if you uploaded some pictures of your mod for me to check out, to see if I could do the same.

You can possibly just use a diode to prevent current backflow. I'm not sure if this would be easier or not, it's just another way of doing it.

Yeah, i thought of that. I was also thinking that the PS2 has to change polairity to the motor to reverse its direction so wouldn't a didode mess that up? If not, it would definitely be an easier way to go.

Good point, I'm not sure how the drive motor works off hand. If that is the case, your way would be a hell of a lot easier than gating and all that good stuff with multiple diodes.

anyone know where the points for this are on a v4 ? i opened a friends to do his and its TOTALLY different from my v7 and my confidence isnt at an all time high after screwing up the controller ports on my other v7 (which is spare parts now).

I pulled apart my rommates (SCPH-30001 with U14.... for the serial and 8 screws on the bottom) and if you look on the underside of the drive, it has a PCB board with 3 little plugs in the lower right. the plug with the black and red wires runs to the small motor that drives the opening of the tray. Hope this helps.

So I have it all wired up and just have to install it in the case. I used a DPDT switch wired to enable reversing of the motor. To prevent current back flow, I interrupted one of the motor's contacts with the PS2 main board with a realy that is normal closed. The coil on the relay was wired to the output of the switch so each time you activate the motor (forward or reverse) it cuts the connection of the motor to the main board. Whether or not this is nessacary is still in question so hopefuly someone who doesn't want to mess with the relay can wire up a switch and battery and let us know. The hard part, which I didn't get a pic of, is desoldering just one of the 2 motor's ribbon connections from the board. Be careful, it is a tiny ribbion and can tear easily. Good luck

EDIT: So It works, but the relay is unreliable when trying to open the tray normally. It actually makes a high pitched squeal (the realy) when the PS2 sends current through. Any ideas? I'm thinking is too small of a realy, but have really started to question wheter or not I want to mess with a relay at all. Thoughts?

The points are circled on this diagram, to be used on V4 I think, ignore the blue wires.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't realise someone already pointed them out.

I posted a thread about this the middle of last year... can't seem to find it now though...

But after like 7 months of running this process, all the consoles I have modded have all worked excellently!

I built my contraption into the expansion port on my V10, but on my brothers console I created a switch box which plugs into the console.

I am now working on a bistable timer circuit with IR support using a 555Timer IC and a Low frequency IR Filter IC... Seems to be going good, I just need to finalize the IR Circuitry...

As for your 'Relay'... it is not needed... There is not enough voltage to cause an electrical cascade, just using the DPDT and a Momentary switch will surfice. You can't just add diodes to the Motor pins either, you wouldn't be able to reverse the polarity...
