I'm planning on adding an 80mm fan as well. It's rated at 12V, 28mA. Can I just solder it to the original fan's wires and would it work? It's a low RPM fan. I hope it's good enough for my V5 PS2.
Yes you can solder it directly. That's exactly what I did:Originally Posted by DrGast

Except yours was a 60mm fan. Does the PS2 fan blow air into the case or out of it?Originally Posted by cyrbanen
My 80mm fan barely fits on the outside of the PS2 case with network adapter and optical audio cable connected, but it should work.
I just installed a v9 fan into my v7, now all i hear is the HD spining. Peace at last.
I have installed a small USB hub and mount it under the right side of my V9 PS2. (So I can use flash drive, USB mic, eyetoy and fans simultaneously.) I have spliced a 3 pin fan connector on the end of some USB cables.
Just solder red wire to red and black to black. This will only provide 5v to the fan but I prefer to use a more quiet solution. You will need to test if your fan will start with only 5v, hence the soldering of the 3 pin fan connector. I have found that most quality 80mm fans powered by 5v will provide more airflow than the original PS2 Fan and still be super quiet.
I have also made a USB fan for the HDD, from an old Pentium 3 CPU fan. It attaches to the PS2 by grabbingthe ridges of the front facia, thus requiring no modding to the PS2 itself and can be used on all fatty PS2s. I will provide pics if anyone is interested.
I would like some pics urbigbro!
I will take some pics of the front fan with my webcam. But the 80mm in the back was just softmounted with some hot glue because it gets in the way of the optical port. I'm thinking I can use a 70mm fan I have lying around. It won't start on 5v though. Anyone know if it is safe to combine the 5v of two USB ports to get 10v?
I also killed my USB hub while I was desoldering it to make it fit my needs![]()
Here are some pics of the 3 pin fan connector I soldered for 5V power to my fan, as well as the fan I modded to clip on to the front of the PS2. This fan was made from an Intel Celeron (P3 Era) flip chip CPU fan. The grooves I made to grip the PS2's front ridges are made from hot glue. I oiled the groove I wanted to use as a mold then melted the glue into it with a hot glue gun. I also used hot glue to insulate the soldered wires in the USB cable. Useful stuff I must say! This setup is used to cool the HDD as I noticed it getting quite hot.
how do you cuts a hole thru the ps2 case?
