You're thinking the HDCombo and the last company I remember selling it was divineo.cn but they stopped soon after I got mine. I'm sure if you dig around enough, you'll find someone still selling them, but it may also be a good idea to look into the SATA adapter someone posted here some time ago. Not as nice looking, but it will support newer HDD's.
Before going to work, I googled it and found most vendors are selling it wholesale, but this one place has it as a per piece item.

Hopefully they still have them in stock. Good luck.

Not much about the HDCombo, i've already ordered that SATA-adapter version your propably talking about. I'm just looking for the enclosure.
But well, since get all kind of boxes cheap from work, i might aswell design my own
I think i will buy an 2,5" SATA HDD, put it on laying left side on top of the PS2, just above MC port, get an nice box, make ventilation hole, whick also serves as power/SATA-wire path through the PS2 cover, and backside of the HDD box i install an fan. And also the box serves as an vertical-stand helper![]()
just a tought..
If you remove the drive of a v12/13 and use sata hdd it should fit in the place of the removed laser unit.
this would be a nice solution for the hd kit without casing.
Best regards
Northbear
how much did you pay for the sata kit including shipping?
$25 aka 17€ plus shipping $8 and i bought two of them incase i get another V12. Quite cheap compared to if you solder and design it yourself.
I will post pictures of this project once i get the parts :P
If you want to add more utility to the HDD enclosure, I recommend this Intec A/V Selector with Multi-Tap.
http://www.amazon.com/Intec-2fV-Sele.../dp/B0007Q1IMQ
The PS2 just sits on top of the multi-tap, but you could drill holes where the PS2's feet would rest and run the screws through the multi-taps plastic to hold it together.
A 2.5" HDD will fit without modification. A 3.5" will require removing an few internal posts and the remote holder box from the inside.
The s-video capable A/V selector is powered by the PS2 via the multi-tap plug. It uses 5v to power it. Since I didn't want to leave my PS2 on to switch to other sources, I just plugged the multi-tap plug into a PS2-USB adapter, which in turn is plugged into a A/C to USB adapter.
This gives me the option to still use the multi-tap function when needed, but you probably could directly attach the multi-tap to the controller port internally, if desired. I just didn't want to mess with making a switch to toggle between attached and non attached states.
The only thing I don't like about this system is the A/V switch can only be switched via remote, no buttons on the actual unit in case the remote is broken or lost.
I got the adapter and laser, after installation, i noticed there's maybe unrepairable problem with laser.
So i removed the laser unit, and laid an 2,5" SATA in place of it. The HDD did fit perfectly, like made for it. But there was no room for connectors, so i needed to cut the metal where the battery was standing.
Then i got power from USB connector - inside. I dont know how much current does the PS2 give to USB, but it must give atleast 1A(500mA per port). The HDD takes about 500mA on running, dunno how big startup spike there is, if any.
I did keep the HDD adapter on the backside of PS2, and hardwired the SATA cable into it, and pulled inside the PS2.
Then i shaped rectangle hole in where the disc should go, and now i can remove the HDD, or connect external SATA cable from PC, just by opening the lid
No i need to make an cover for the adapter, since it's laying naked on the backside.
And i have some problem still with PS2 randomly not recognizing the HDD. Once it recognizes it, and no matter how much i wiggle the wires, it works perfectly. But after poweroff, and again on, can't recognize at all.
Could that be related to ModBo4 somehow? Like in V9 you must turn the Macrovision off on USBAdvance.
