  1. #1 Getting power from the motherboard
    T07N Guest
Ok, I found a good 3.3v point used by dms3 and other 3.3v chips. I decided to buy some blue leds and soldering them to the 3.3v. My question is... Is this harmful to the PS2? Drawing power from it whenever my PS2 is gaming. Can someone explains how modchips draw power from the PS2 without damaging the unit? It turns off after booting?

I heard that the old Magic series constantly draws power from the motherboard and that interrupts the PS2 causing the PS2 to die faster. I was also told that today's chip turn themselves off after they boot a game. Is this true? I thought only the Matrix Infinity does that. Does Duo and Magic 3.1 do that?

Ok, next question. Can I solder all 5 leds to the 3.3v point? =) (Please take it easy on me, I don't know much about how electronics work.) Or should I link the power to the leds?

    Here's what I'm talking about: http://img56.exs.cx/img56/6245/ledplan.jpg

Which plan should I go with? Or you guys have a better one?

By the way, my leds are rated to be used at 3-4v. I don't care if they dim down when they dont get enough power, I don't need them to be super bright anyways.

    Thanks for any help.

Plan one. although i wouldnt stick that many leds to the same point. running them in series like that would draw too much power. i doubt they would even turn on running like that.

What about 3? I think that sounds good.

What if I draw power from 2 different 3.3v point?

Also, you know anything about affect/effects of drawing power from the motherboard?

I second that, does the DUO series of chips turn themselves off after booting?

I have never installed leds into the ps2 board before, but have done plenty with dreamcast and xbox, and i have not experienced any ill side effects from connecting leds to the motherboard power sources.

Drawing power from different 3.3v points would be ideal.

you can also get 12v LEDs that are already set up. if you tap directly into the PSU, it should work much better than risking mobo trouble

also, the christmas light setup (#2) is bretty bad since in case 1 LED burns out all of them stop working.

Yeah, or you can do multiple LEDs off the PSU with resistors inline.

Directly to the psu means it's on even when the PS2 is not booted, I hate that. I want my lights to light up when my PS2 is on. I don't see how you can kill a PS2 by taking some power off the motherboard. But again, I don't know crap about electronics and I might be putting my PS2 in risk but I'm willing to take it.

With the assurance of kaioshade's dreamcast and xbox light mods and nothing hapenning to his mods I'm pretty confident that nothing will happen to my PS2. Loy also did something similar to what I'm doing with much more leds. I don't know where he soldered his leds but I'm sure it is on the motherboard.

I'll solder 3 leds to one 3.3v point and another 2 to another 3.3v.
