well... in that pic, he's soldering it to the point on the bottom of the HDD activity light that's already present on the front of the network connector so he's just basicly extending the light.

I think for the PS2 it's adding one all togehter.

I've done a few USB jump drive mods, and a few HD mods, but I'm not sure how all the pins in a cat 5 cable work. I would immagine there's one that's a Data+ wire. (Wich is basicaly like a USB device or a HD) You wanna tap that as your feed, and then just hook the ground up to a ground point. it should flicker as data comes through.

That's just a theoy though. I'll have o go look up a network connection anatomy somewhere to give you a definate answer.

The link signal (for LED's) on normal network adapters (talking PC PCI cards here) are connected to a signal from the MAC chip--not simply powered off the CAT cable. Someone would need to disassemble their NA and *carefully* probe the controller chip in the NA whilst plugging and unplugging the network cable to see if any of the pins change state when the cable is inserted/removed.

If there is a pin that goes high (+5v or +3v) when the network cable is connected, that would be a perfect link indicator signal source.
