when SMS tries to load up my avi

theres a splash of bubbles and sound. no image and soon enough, it dies completely. just freezes up the screen and the disc is spinning madly in the ps2.

any help would be appreciated

If you want effective help you should post in a relevant forum. The one you posted in now is reserved for topics related to 'SwapMod', 'NoMod' and 'exploit' methods of booting an unmodded console, which has absolutely nothing in common with the SMS problem you reported. So here your post is seriously off-topic.

You should try again in the subforum dedicated to SMS, which you will find inside the forum named "PS2 Homebrew/Dev & Emu Scene".
