V16 PS2 and USBADVANCE
V16 PS2 and USBADVANCE –
I have a V16 PS2 and a memor32 chip that I used to successfully install mcboot 1.8 on including usbadvance to an official ps2 memory card. I can boot the PS2 and get it to usbadvance and I have 2 external hard drives - 1 500gb and 1 80 gb (no they arent on the ps2 at the same time, I have used both the same way and I am getting the same result). Both hard drives show up in usbadvance and I have used the pc utility to install the games to the hard drive but when I try to run the games from the hard drive I get a black screen and no noise. The games were Shadow of Colossus and God of War 2. When I boot to hdloader it doesnt see the hard drive (I think for obvious reasons not having an internal IDE interface). Can anyone shed some light on what I can do to make this work?
You are really confusing, do you know that ?

What's the point of having that game launcher if you never even try to use it ?
What PC utility ?
and I have used the pc utility to install the games to the hard drive
There are two sets of HDD game installers available, using mutually incompatible methods.
Each of those sets contains several different installers, the choice of which is up to the user.
One set is for USBAdvance/USBExtreme.
For proper operation this requires a USB-connected drive formatted to FAT32.
The other set is for HDLoader/HDAdvance/ToxicOS.
For proper operation this requires an IDE-connected drive formatted to PS2-specific format.
During game installation the drive may be connected by USB to a PC (but never by USB to the PS2).
Since a v16 PStwo can never have an IDE-connected HDD you are restricted to use the USB-connected type, leaving you with USBAdvance/USBExtreme as the only gamelauncher.
"Try to run" you say, but if you didn't use USBAdvance/USBExtreme you were using inappropriate methods.

Your assumption is correct. That is why HDLoader will never work on your console.
When I boot to hdloader it doesnt see the hard drive (I think for obvious reasons not having an internal IDE interface).
You can't make HDLoader work on a v16 console.

The best you can do is to use USBAdvance instead, for those few games it is compatible to. (appx 50% or less) I'm sorry, but there is nothing to be done about it.

OK sorry Let me try again. I have a v16 ps2 scph-79001. I purchased a memor32 memory card because I read that it was the answer to modding the ps2 without having to open the PS2. After discovering that games are really buggy using the memor32 1.1 or 1.2 firmware I started researching another method of software mod and I discovered mcboot. I read hundreds of posts and was successfully able to install launchelf version 4.30 on a genuine sony memory card. I can boot into LaunchELF with the R1 button during boot. I then browse and launch USBADV - USB Advance Free Version. At first I installed a 500 gb hard drive formated to fat32 (yes it can be done with a special utility) and ripped an ISO of Shadow of Colossus and plugged in the hard drive and nothing showed up in usb advance. USB Advance informed me that I need to use a PC installer to install the game to the hard drive. The utility I used is called USBExtreme.exe. After installing to the hard drive I was able to see the game "Shadow of colossus" in the games list at which point I selected and chose start. The screen went black and the hard drive light flickered for a few seconds and then nothing. I left it sit for 20 minutes and still a black screen. I decided that it might be the size of the hard drive so I pulled out my 80 GB external (yes a completely seperate device made by a different manufacturer - both the hard drive and the usb to hard drive converter) and followed the same procedure and got the same results. After reading your reply I need to know where I can find a list of games that is compatible with this setup.
You will get the "Black screen" when the game is not compatible.
Shadow of the Colussus and GOW2 are not compatible with UsbAdvance.
There is a compatibility list here
You can use a web translator if you need to view it better.
And a list right on this forum
There is a whole section on USBAdvance and drives.
I miss the Jaydium site, it had the best compatibility list ever, but he shut down for some reason.
