Swap MAgic 3.6 and USB HD
Swap MAgic 3.6 and USB HD –
08-30-2005,04:37 PM
Well I figured I would start a new thread for this question I have.
How do I get my backups onto a usb drive, and get it to boot?
I read the manual - whats an elf?
rename the SCUS(spelling) file to swapmagic.elf, then extract all the files from an iso to that same swapmagic folder on the hard drive?
do I have to use a program to format the HD a certain way?
can I have other stuff on the HD?
if I want a hd with a backup of ALL the discs I have - is there a way to do it?-sm manual says only 4 at a time.
do I put all the files in the same swapmagic directory?
do I create sub directories for the files and let the .elf file ( if I know what it is ) in the swapmagic directory?
I see alot about hdloader, and those type programs using elf files, but I never saw anything about how to get one form the disc/iso file.
PLEASE help if you can, or smack me on the back of the head and point me to a tutorial that I have missed.

P.S. - Swap Magic 3.6 works GREAT for burnt dvds so far!! Officemax brand dvd-r's 8X ( burnt at 4x - didnt want to trust 8x yet ) name comes up as FUJIFILM on the info for them

Ok, first of all, ELF files are PS2 Executable files. (It's similar to .EXE files on windows) You should be able to copy them anywhere on the memory card, unless it's told to place them in a specific folder with other files.
To get ISO files to boot from your USB drive, you will need USBAdvance. Swap magic won't let you do it. Basicly, you have to put the PS2 disc in your computer, then using a tool that come with USB Advance, you'll copy the games to your USB drive. Once it's done, you have to copy the ELF file of USB Advance in your memory card, in the directory of your choice, then launch it. Once it's launched, you select your game and then you can play! (Note that USB Advance as a quite bad compatibility with games and that it's the only way to play games from USB drive.)
For more info about USB Advance, on this forum go in the "PS2 HDD Discussion" and then in the "USB HDD Discussion".
HD Loader is quite similar to USB Advance, but MUCH better, and much more compatible. If you have a slim ps2, you will need to mod it to be able to plug a computer hard drive directly into your PS2. If you have a big old ps2, you need a network adapter, wich will let you plug your hard drive in it.
I hope this help you! Now.. must go to bed....

Update
OK - I used usbextreme to format the drive, and install some games from cds!!! Now - I have a usbadvance elf called - USBADVN.ELF file size is 472KB.
It wouldnt do anything when I renamed that to SWAPMAGIC.ELF and had it in the SWAPMAGIC folder on the drive. I tried to put the HDLOADER elf file on there and rename it, and IT WORKED!!! BUT - I have a slim PS2 and no internal hard drive, so it wouldnt find anything
So basically I solved all of my problems except how to get the usbadvance elf file to work..
I copied all of the files to the SWAPMAGIC folder from the usbadvance cd also
SYSTEM.CNF - .06kb
USBADVN.ELF - 471.82kb
DUMMY.BIN - 5.00mb
am I missing something? I know the PS2 can see my usb hard drive since the hdloader loaded....do I have the wrong usbadvance files? need something else?
thanx for the help so far!!

You need to rename the USBADVN.ELF file to SWAPMAGIC.ELF

I did rename it, but it still didnt work - when I renamed the hdloader it found it but said no drive was attached....I am trying to figure out if that was the right usbadvance file I used.
Thanx
