I've decided to go down the swap magic / flip top cover route for my PS2 modification...
Just 1 question...
Is the latest version of swap magic (3.6) able to play all (or most) games, without extra pissing about??? (e.g, having to put 3 different disks in, having to edit game files all the time, etc.)
The compatibility with games and homebrew discs is horrible.
They may have gotten around the homebrew disc incompatibilities with the ability to launch homebrew from a USB key.
Lately more and more games need patches or tocswappin' so id say 1 in 10 dosnt work without some sort of doubleswap.
Havnt really had any problems with homebrew stuff, it all seem to work :chinscrat
Everything has been working fine for me. I've burned quite a few games and launched some homebrews off CD. You just have to make sure that the CD is formatted correctly with the CDVDGen. The USB launching works great for me too, I use it to start Keylauncher all the time.
Yeah, I got SMD3.6 too, and I only know about 3-4 games I can't back up. (those dvd9 hehe) I've backed up around 50 some games and I don't have a clue what patching a game is. As for those DVD9 game...GT4, Xenosaga, and God of War are the only ones I think are worth playing, IMO! Not bad. Oh yeah, I've got homebrews booting too no prob. Just use CDGen like Elxx says, its real easy.
I bought a SMD3.6 plus, and I was trying to boot the program from my USB key.
I followed the instructions in the manual, created an folder in the root of USB key called SWAPMAGIC, and rename the HDLoader.ELF to SWAPMAGIC.ELF and put it into the folder...
But when I plug the USB key in the USB port and start SM 3.6 disk, it freezes on the Swap Magic 3.6 screen (no Load Program option and Video Mode option was shown, it just freezes on a screen of Swap Magic 3.6 picture).
Anybody can tell me what's wrong? Is it the problem of my USB key?
My PS2 model is 30001.

could be that the usb drive isn't compatible.. lol..
try us'n launchelf (name it to swapmagic) and also put hdl in there (but keep the original name)
if it boots u can edit launch elf to boot ur hdl elf
i read somewhere that the mem exploit couldn't boot hdl DIRECTLY and u have to use a loader 1st lol

Another question, here is the intruction of how to load ELF from MC:
How to install by the CD image :
First you need to download the files from http://www.swapmagic3.com/smboot.zip
Then you need to unzip the file (SMBOOT.ZIP). Afterwards burn the image file (PS2.ISO) into
a CD and boot it with the SwapMagic3.6. Referring to the file list found in the
"..\SMBOOT\FILE.LST", files in folder "..\SMBOOT" will be installed into the slot1 memory card.
However, you can edit the "..\SMBOOT\FILE.LST" to remove a line of
"FILExx=XXXXXXX.XXX;1" to install less file, or replace any of the files in folder "..\SMBOOT"
with your prefer.

How to launch:
Put the memory card in slot 1 and boot SwapMagic3.6, if the program
"mc0:/SWAPMAGIC/SWAPMAGIC.ELF" is found and it will be launched automatically.
When the title screen appears (you will see 2 options Load Program and Video Mode on the
screen), you can press:
A. "UP+L1" buttons to load SMBOOT0.ELF
B. "UP+L2" buttons to load SMBOOT1.ELF
C. "UP+R1" buttons to load SMBOOT2.ELF
D. "UP+R2" buttons to load SMBOOT3.ELF
If both SWAPMAGIC.ELF and SMBOOTx.ELF is found in FILE.LST, after the installation, which ELF it will load? In order to load SMBOOT1-4.ELF, should I delete the SWAPMAGIC.ELF from the list? Otherwise it will be run by default, right?
Yesterday I have successfully copied the ELF files into my MC using ARMAX3.
Now I dont have to swap the disc any more to load my HDLoader... That's great :)
