swap at browser?

I've heard of this working on a few different versions but I don't know which ones and which types of discs. Anyone know detailed info? It was my initial impression this would not work with any version because the boot sequence includes the disc verification?

I think it was with SCPH500xx, where you could load a playstation 1 game with a large TOC (so it shows up in the browser), eject it manually (via slide card), replace with a burned PSX game, and be able to play it after pushing the drive back in.

I don't know with which versions, but I'm pretty sure it's just for PSX/PS1 back-ups
