slim v12 - REAL noob help please
slim v12 - REAL noob help please –
Hi, I just got my PS2 that I won from the McDonalds promotion thing, and I am SOOOOOO confused about what all I need to get the backups working ( computers are so easy ).
I want to do either the usbextreme or the swap magic, but it seems like you have to jump through hoops to get a lot of the stuff to work - ELF? Santas helper?
I was wondering what exactly i need to do this. Will the swap magic work with nothing else? usbextreme work with nothing else - but the usb drive which I have?
Please help as I am too old to figure it out myself it seems..argh
With Swap Magic you need teh Swamp Magic Boot discs and the Flip top for Slimline PS2s.
USB Extreme is extremely slow (thats what I heard), so try to get HD Connect with a 120 or 200GB Maxtor HDD
BTW, If you want to just boot normally without having to Swap, I think you should get HDConnect or a Chip (Matrix Infiniy or DMS4 Pro)
ok - so let me get this straight....
Swap Magic will be ok by itself, but to load games from an external HD i need to buy something else also? Like that hdloader thing or whatever?
Isnt there something that would just let me load from the HDD without the swap magic?
Oh - I wont buy a modchip - I think the prices are outrageous for the "good" ones - plus the lasers are supposedly bad on the V12 that I have, and I just dont see the use of doing it. I dont want to play backups constantly, just for some of the things we use alot, I will make a backup so the disc doesnt go bad.
Swap Magic only boots backups...it wont let you browse the HDD. For a slimline you need HD Connect if you want to connect a HDD straight to the PS2 V12. Mod chips arent bad for lasers, the V12 lasers are bad normally, so if you buy a premoded system, they give ou the system, plus the chip, and a lser fix.

I was looking at the DMS chips, but no way to solder it, and I wont have someone do it unless they are local.
I thought I read somewhere that the Swap Magic 3.6 has a way to hook a drive up throug hthe USB port? Maybe that was for the DMS, so dont yell if I am wrong.
Update - I just purchased the Swap Magic 3.6 and fliptop cover - consolesource had a price I couldnt refuse - too bad I went cheap on the shipping - have to wait for the usps to deliver
now hopefully I am right about the usb hard drive working right off with swap magic..hopefully..going to research now ( again ).

got my sm today with the flip top cover - the flip cover doesnt seem to want to stay down tight enough, so when I swap I have to hold the cover down a bit - might just tape it down so it stays tight...dunno why it doesnt.
tried god of war and destroy all humans - both worked - well at least for a bit...didnt play alot since I was just testing when I backed them up. Dont have many games yet, so hopefully I can back up everything and have this work fine.
I do want to find out how to use the usb drive, and for more than 4 files - trying to figure out if I rename a whole iso file to elf or what...yes I am a newbie
Cant believe it worked so far...figured it wouldnt with all the complaints people have had - not even a twitch here!!
heehee....well i think the flip tops for the slimline are a joke. wasted your money IMO. theres a tutorial out there (have to google for it) that i used when the v12 first came out that lets you mod your v12 with a small piece of plastic and duct tape w/o breaking the warr. seal so all you really needed was the sm3.6 discs. those same sm3.6 discs come with the usb loader to use an external usb hdd...
I got it cause it was only $4 more than just the plain discs. I didnt break the seal, just folded the top off and kept the seal intact.
I keep hearing about the SM being able to do USB drives, but I have yet to find it..I got 2 discs with mine - dvd and cd...thats it. I found the SMBOOT file on the wedsite, but that still needs another program to get the usb loaded.
Could someone tell me where the usb files are for the SM?
I actually got USBAdvance to work with it now - used the smboot to install it to the memory card, then the l1andup thing to access it...then all of a sudden the ones on the usb drive started working too..lol..maybe my external case is going bad.
Compatibility is TERRIBLE for usb though.
Do the ones that are with the SM work better? ( If someone tells me where they are )
Is there somewhere that explains the whole business with the laser on V12 and/or other PS2 versions? I've tried searching but have not found exactly what the deal is. Is it that backups cause the laser to fail faster than original discs? Is this unavoidable regardless of whether you're using SM3.6 vs. an installed modchip? Thanks in advance...
