Is there any way to set FMCB so that it automatically boots into ulaunchelf, UNLESS I press an alternate key?

I used to just hold down R1, but I'm never sure when the right time for that is, and lately, it freezes at a blank screen when I try that (though ule boots just fine if I let FMCB get all the way to it's menu and select ule from there).

You can hold down R1, just about anytime. I usually hold it down when the FMCB logo shows up...

Or I believe you can go into the ULE configuration, and set it to AUTO load, best thing I can say is wait till dlanor checks this post, as he is the current co-developer of ULe.

@dstarfire: Start the FMCB-Configurator and look at the E1-Launch-Key/Button-Config.
There is the Auto-Entry, where you can set the first autoboot-path.

There is nothing you can configure in uLE to modify what FMCB will decide to launch or not. That has to be decided by proper use of the FMCB configurator.

    @dstarfire:
Several settings in the FMCB configurator contribute to choose what program (if any) will be launched at boot of FMCB.

The default behaviour is to check for a disc in tray, and if that is an ESR disc then launch the ESR elf, but if it is a normal PS2 disc then launch it normally. Only after that will the program look for a possible autolaunch elf configuration, and if none is defined (as is normal) then the normal PS2 menu is shown, with the usual FMCB enhancements. And here it is the entry "Free McBoot Configurator" that you need to use.

Directly on entry you are prompted to press either Circle or Cross, which will define that key as the menu action key for the rest of this configurator session. And after that you will see the top level configurator menu.

Here you should enter the submenu entitled "Configure E1 launch keys..." and configure the first entry (the "Auto" one), using the file selector that appears to choose "mc0:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF", so that this path is placed in the list. This is the main step in ensuring that your console always boots uLE, though some more stuff is needed as well (further down).

But when you get all settings prepared to prioritize the automatic launch of uLE, you also need some way to avoid that, so you can still enter the FMCB menu. For that purpose you shold now define another of the E1 launch keys to do just that, by moving cursor to the key entry you want, and pressing 'Select' until that entry's value is shown as "OSDMENU".

This is also a good time to define any other bootup key commands you may want. I always define some key for the FASTBOOT command (again using 'Select' to do that). But when you are done you should back out to the top level configurator menu again. (Backing out is done by pressing Triangle, just as in uLE.)

The next two setting changes are only needed if (like me) you want uLE to be booted even when there is a disc in tray, and without having to push any buttons to make it so.

Back in the top-level menu, enter the submenu entitled "Configure OSDSYS opetions..." and toggle its entry named "Skip Disc Boot:" to the value "ON". And then back out from this submenu.

Back in the top-level menu yet again, move the cursor on down to the entry "FastBoot:" and make sure that its setting is "OFF" rather than "ON".

This completes the settings to be changed, but you also need to save these settings to your FREEMCB.CNF file, which is done by moving the cursor to the command entry "Save CNF to MC0" (or MC1 if that is where you boot from) and use that command. The status line (2nd text line from top) will display the result of the save attempt, and assuming all went well you are now done and can leave the configurator using either of the two exit commands at the bottom lines of the menu.

    Best regards: dlanor

Wow!! That's a far more detailed explanation than I'd expected, but I definitely appreciate it, as well as the extra tips.

If there was a 'give rep' button on this forum, you'd get a ton of it.
