I have 2 questions:
1. to use free mcboot on an ntsc slim ps2, could you make a backup of a ps1 game with the free_mcboot.elf and install folder on it and use the ps1 swap method to load it?
2. if not, could somebody lend me a swap magic 3.6 or 3.8 boot disc so i can boot it off my flash drive?
thanks

No. It is impossible to use any PS2 program with the console in PS1 mode.

That is not likely to happen (and I don't even have any myself).
What you should do is to visit the FreeVAST forum inside the Homebrew/Dev forum. There you will find lots of info on various installation methods, including a free installation service where you only pay postage for sending your MC both ways. (Which is what you'd have to do with a borrowed disc anyway, so the cost for you is the same.)
