Yeah there are plenty of methods of playing ps2 games without a modchip, but you cannot play games from CDs that are larger than 72minutes, and they require you to either remove the top of your ps2, or take off the drive tray and use a plastic knife to fool the ps2 into thinking the tray is closed... when you manually open it, allowing for a 'swap' trick.

hehbo2k2 is right. You can play backups using the knife/credit card trick but that is just plain stupid. 99% of the people who use this method end up busting their ps2. Now what would you rather do, buy a new ps2 for $200 or spend $50 or less for a chip? No brainer there. Just buy a mod.
