    Hi Folks

Just thought I would share my sad story of attempting to install FMCB

Picked up a 30004 console with a few games for $50. Was a bit worried as I couldn't test it and its age etc. but it was pristine (as were the games etc.) and worked great with the games (CD and DVD).

Wanted it as something to mess around with (mostly homebrew and see what it was like as a media player) so FMCB in my mind was the way to go. Had done plenty of reasearch (great info in the forums - thanks ) and made my slide tool and had a pratice etc. and all was good to go - just needed 007AUF.

Eventually found a copy and my first issue was read errors on the disc (crapped out at ~76-77%) so couldn't make a good copy. Compiled one with what I had and replaced DRIVING.ELF and was ready to go.

Played the first level and then made the save. Now time to swap the disks.......

....hang on whats going on...not working.......messing around in there........wasn't this hard....oh shit is that the disc spinning......ahhhhhhh abort...abort...

What was the problem? I was using the damn slide tool upside down (i.e notch was to the left not right). Must have had abrain snap or something but I guess once I started I tried to force it a bit to much. End result now wont read discs.

Pull the whole thing apart and I am sure the laser was working but if it was when I first started messing around with it, it certainly isn't now. Get nothing out of it at all. Finally gave up "tinkering" after a couple of hours and revisted it again today and pulled the whole laser asembly out and sure enough the small ribbon on the underside has been kinked and possibly (hard to tell) a couple (maybe 1) connection ripped due to a tiny tear on the outside.

So a perfectly good unit ruined because I:-

a.) used the slide tool the worng way
b.) kept at it (should have realised what an idiot I was sooner )
c.) probably did more harm than good messing around with all the assembly etc.

Not happy but I guess that's life Given the time and effort invested so far probably not a bad return on my $60 out lay ($10 for 007) but probably not the type of "entertainment" I guess I had originally planed

Anyway just thought I would share

The console is still salvageable. I say find another ribbon cable and try again. Or get an install from one of the volunteers and use HDD.

Hey TehJawknee - yeah I know that it salvageable (have sent a PM to Spud hoping he can help me out). If I can get FMCB on the MC then I will mess around with stuff via a USB memory stick. The ribbon that was kinked/broken was the tiny one on the underside of the laser asembly (has a small chip on it) so not sure that could be replaced or fixed.

Suppose worst case is I could try for another laser asembly but for the cost just better off getting another 2nd hand unit. Depends how much I want to pursue it (was only something to mess around with).

Wow i just had the same problem yesterday, i also tried forcing it in out of rage since i couldnt hear the click when i was moving my slide card to the left. My ps2 wouldnt put its drive out anymore so the game was stuck with the dvd drive in there. I shook my ps2 a little (much). And i pressed eject button and it came out, got an e-mail from a friend, telling me i should get fmcb installed by one of the members here :P. Thank god i didnt break my lens :-(, i hope it will turn out good for you in the end (Y)
