First, you have to get FMCB installed again with uLaunchELF and the USB modules.
Download the latest version of uLaunchELF
here.
Without the USB modules and uLaunchELF, it's almost as good as not having FMCB at all.
Next, you can either use
Open PS2 Loader (OPL) or
PS2ESDL to load your games off a USB disk.
OPL supports the internal HDD (Of older PS2s), SMB and USB devices, and has VMC and IGR support.
PS2ESDL supports only USB devices and IEEE1394A disks, but is tuned for USB device support (And therefore has better performance in general for USB disks).
Download either (or both) of them, and stick them your USB device (or memory card, if you want to).
Next, you have to install your games.
If you want to only use PS2ESDL, you can use PS2DCDMP (PS2ESDL's game installer) to install your games.
Otherwise, you have to use tools that can install games in formats that both loaders can use like iso2opl, usbutil, ul_install.exe (And so on...).
You may also use .iso disc images too, but the limit for games then would be 4GB/game.
Also, .iso disc images are only supported by the prototype PS2ESDL v0.816 and newer (The public stable v0.810 does not support .iso disc images).
You have to make sure that none of your games are fragmented too (No fragmented regions whatsoever).
Download the Auslogics Disk Defrag utility and use it to defragment your disk.
Never use the Windows disk defragmention utility, or Power Defragmenter unless you know how to use it properly.
Lastly, launch uLaunchELF by holding the key which you had binded uLaunchELF to earlier on at bootup, and uLaunchELF should boot up.
Finally, launch PS2ESDL or OPL by selecting their executables in the file browser.
Happy gaming! :)
PS: Your console was probably making that odd sound because it was unable to read the disc you burnt.
Try using verbatim DVD-R discs (Discs that manufactured by either Taiyo Yuden or Mitsubushi) instead.
Also, if your console was making a scrapping noise: Place some tape on the inner hub to make the disc thicker to give your console a better grip on it.
I used sticky tape was that was not too thin.
