Recently I got from a friend's PS2 SLIM with a dead laser head (in my opinion, he said that once had smoked, and after that time no longer spinning disks )....

I was reading on the Internet that is able to play through a USB Flash or USB HD, but as I have understood the need to keep a disk drive, because it is necessary to drive who is forced to take information from the USB ... Is there any chance of free disk to run games from usb .... ?

You don't need to have a disc in drive...
You don't even need a functional laser, or drive-mechanics.

I would still leave the drive connected, even thought it is not 'working' anymore, it still partially works, like a 'terminator' (some people, which know about SCSI probably know what I mean...).

Issues could occur (during init, or access), when a drive is not even connected, so better have a dead drive connected than none at all.

I would try opening up your ps2 and looking where the laser is. In some models they have a little wheel you turn to adjust the laser. They said it was smoking? Where was it smoking from and do you really believe that? Could have been dust on the heatsinks or something, but I doubt it even happened if you didn't see it

look on youtube for 'adjust ps2 laser' and compare it to your ps2 when you open it to see if you can fix it. I had trouble reading discs and turned the little wheel 3 clicks and it works perfect now
