u might be able to get a save that works with many ps1-games at http://www.exploitstation.com (look in forum and get the 800+ title.db from dl)

instead of leaving the top off why not wire a battery/switch to the drive motor and use that to open the drawer. there is a thread about it here somewhere.

the link to the thread offsite is useless now but there is plenty of info in there to get it done. it will work with less voltage though. mine runs with 5v and im pretty sure 3 would suffice.

My ps2 is open right now, i took the drive coer off and the cd/dvd is exposed at all times, im sure its not good for the console or the laser, so i m planning on getting a fliptop case soon.
you don't need to spend all that cash lol, once u've got your installer cd burnt all you need to do is buy an old psx cheat cd, I bought one for 99p here in the uk (after buying the new xploder with the x-link cable for 30 quid). Then you can do a simple disk swap with the lid off, wish I'd done that and saved money lol
