this is too confusing and the site is so unorganized you can barely find information w/o doing serious digging.

I have a SCPH-39001 (fat) ps2 that im trying to mod. dont want to send my card to a stranger, not trying to buy anything other than what i have. don't want a mod chip, screw AR max, not looking to break my disk drive with swap magic, etc.

its my understanding that i can soft-mod my ps2 like so:

take a game (in my case mgs 3 snake eater), use imgburn to rip the disk to my desktop, use apache to edit the TOC and replace the NETDOWN.ELF, use imgburn to re-burn the iso to a DVD-R.

Open the system and remove the white spindle thing so the disk can spin with no top. load up the original mgs 3 sn disk, press start, swap the disks, go to special and then camo download and the ulauncher is suppose to start.

now my problem is after swapping the disks and going to camo download the disk will either stop spinning, go to the red screen telling me to insert a PSX disk, or show a disk symbol and a ? at the top left of the screen.

what am I doing wrong? do I have the wrong .elf file? I am tired of wasting my dvd's.

And how we know what .elf file you used for your mod?

You should try this: PS2 Game Swap Trick

It's nicely explained there. Pay attention, I tried some swapping stuff and all I managed to do was destroy my Need For Speed II disc some years ago.

I bought swap magic and installed it that way. Also MGS is unconfirmed so I don't know for sure that will work.

***Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater, NETDOWN.ELF [ press start, your now at the main menu, swap disks, select "SPECIAL", now select "CAMOUFLAGE DOWNLOAD", ulaunchelf will start]
    *** Unconfirmed as working

"Open the system and remove the white spindle thing so the disk can spin with no top". You do put the white thing on top when the disc is spinning, right? Also you did burn your DVD at low speed like 4X and you have good quality DVD's like Verbatim or something?

Also did you rename uncompressed BOOT.ELF to NETDOWN.ELF?

Here is a nice topic too: http://psx-scene.com/forums/f153/usi...t-stuck-62050/ (Using Ps2 Game Swap Trick, got stuck)

Also from what I read here:

    ********http://www.richspsxparts.com/39001.html

All SCPH 39001 model PS2s are Version 7 systems.

Maybe it's your PS2 version, since models after v5/v6 have extra copy protection crap in their BIOS. What version is your PS2? I've done this method on a v5 (really the best PS2 model) and it worked perfectly. The v5/v6s are the 3000xR (this last number will vary depending on your region, e.g. 0 if in Japan, 1 in the Americas, 2 in Australasia, 3 in the UK and 4 in the rest of Europe.) models.********

Maybe that is your problem? Otherwise there's nothing helpfull in that thread. I really hope you get it working, otherwise just order swap magic, it's rather cheap and you can use it for a few games like Jak and Daxter that don't work with ESR.

memory cards are like $5... why not buy a couple and just send it out to someone on the forum that does the freemcboot? or, find someone locally that has a modded (soft or hard) ps2... or find yourself an original 60gb ps3's memory card adapter to do the softmod through your computer. in any case, a replacement 8mb ps2 memory card is still less than $5....

mem cards are like $10. Just bought one...$9.99 (maybe $5 if you trust ebay or something). Because I don't trust someone I do not know and why pay S/H? How about someone just send me their memory card (sarcasm but it would save much more time). nobody here locally that can mod it. not trying to buy something I will never use again past this mod, waste of money.

    @Bayron:

That is the tutorial I have been using. Yes white thing is on it otherwise the disk wont spin at all (it will bounce around but not really spin). yes I did change the name of the boot.elf to netdown.elf. yes I burned it AWS at first, then 8x and then 4x.

PS2 driver is version 1.10, Browser and CD player are 1.20 and dvd player is 2.12U

Id just sell this system or call it quits before I go out and pay $30 for swap magic or something I will never use again. over-charging for a novelty

$5 or $10... then another $5 for shipping... still less than $20 no matter how you add it up. it's chump change, considering what benefits you'll get out of the modded system. memory card, esp the 8mb ones, can be found just about anywhere. doesnt even have to be oem sony - it's just a ps2. i've seen ebay cheapies going for $3 and even THOSE work. if you're too tight to spend less than $15 on your gaming system, perhaps you SHOULD just sell it and let someone else enjoy their time playing it.

perhaps you SHOULD stop posting in this thread if you are not going to help me. I'm to tight to waste my money (no matter how little) on something I do not need. Buy 007 game and actually get some use out of it ($5) or buy swap magic ($30) or some crap for a ps3 ($20) hmmm the choice is obvious. I mean if you have no problem wasting your parents money on $20 memory cards and $30 disks that you will only use once feel free but I work for a living, I have a family and responsibilities so stupid things like modding a game system are on the very bottom of the list that I will waste money on.

Thank you Bayron for being the only person helping and not wasting my time like the guy quoted above me.

i already know, as with Bayron who also told you, that without SPENDING MONEY you will NOT achieve your goal. you couldnt even get away with a free game swapping method on the original playstation... nothing in this world is free. there are plenty of other things in this world that i would spend $15 on and "waste"... even with having a house, a family, and a multitude of other financial responsibilities. it's just $15 (or a case of good beer, a nicer than mcdonald's lunch, a single bet at a casino, etc). sell something else you dont need to get $15... ask YOUR parents for a little help... or better yet, get a better paying job... i'd much rather waste YOUR money than assuming my dead parents still give me mine. perhaps a little time with the SEARCH function would have yielded you your results instead of wasting MULTIPLE PEOPLE'S TIME with your senseless post....

    ^^^
    tl;dr past the first sentence.

looks like neither of you know what you are talking about then. system is now modded. spent $4 on a copy of 007 AUF and it worked, FMCB is now on my mem card. Total investment = $14 $10 for a mem card.....which I didn't even need cause a friend just found his spare mem card and gave it to me for free yesterday and $4 for the game, everything else I either had on hand or got for free.

feel free to waste your money on useless crap, I'm not stupid like you I suppose.

    Peace out.
