Hey guys, Im looking for the cheapest and easyest way to soft mod my ps2, due to the stupid economy problem i have next to no money and a big desire to have some ps2 fun.

any ways the current tools i have are a home made swap disc tool, some DVD + RW s (not sure if there playstation 2 compatible) my console number is sch30003 or somthing like that, ive got a 64 mb thumb drive. a few games with .elf files in them. being Hitman 2 and mortal combat deception a pc and some help from you guys.

i wanna try and do this as cheaply as possible, i dont think there will be any chance of me finding a action replay max any where in my town.

can you guys help me find a cheap solution cheers

The cheapest method of softmodding would be for you to have FMCB install on your memory card. You could install it yourself with a copy of AR or if you live close enough to one of psx-scene's FMCB installers you can actually get it install for free, you just need to pay for shipping.

If your home made swap tool really works so that you can boot burned game backups, then you should also be able to use it to boot burned homebrew discs, which means that you are halfway there already. Being able to boot any homebrew stuff is the main hurdle in getting to install FMCB.

Here's what you need to do:

1: Browse into the Homebrew/Dev forum and its subforum for FMCB, and get hold of the FMCB 'noobie package' which you can find through links there. Feel free to read any tutorials on the subject, but don't waste time on the game-patch or cheat-engine stuff since you have a better homebrew boot method available.

2: Download a bootable ISO for uLaunchELF (aka: uLE) somewhere, one of the places being the uLE home subforum, which is also inside the Homebrew/Dev forum here at psx-scene. When you have it, burn it to a CD or DVD (depending on the ISO type you downloaded, as both types are available).

NB: Do NOT use RW discs. They WILL destroy your PS2 laser (not immediately, but eventually) and they very seldom work properly in a PS2, even before they inevitably kill the laser. Use some good quality DVD-R disc instead (I always use Verbatim 16x DVD-R). This will cost some money, but not too much. You only need one or perhaps a few discs, since most modern PS2 homebrews are not based on using burned discs anymore. Close to 99% of all commercial games can be played without using the CDVD drive at all, if you have either a large USB drive or a LAN connection to a PC, or an internal HDD in the PS2. (A network adaptor is high on the wish list for any owner of a fat PS2 who still lacks one.)

3: Format your 64MB USB stick to FAT32, and if your PC won't do that in its normal format command, then get hold of the ul_format.exe program that comes with USBAdvance (downloadable in most PS2 sites). Just be careful to format the stick, and not your HDD... (with commandline tools such mistakes are very easy to make)

4: Place the FMCB noobie package on that USB stick and then move it to your PS2

5: Use your swap disc tool to boot the uLE disc, just like you would boot a game backup.

6: Use the uLE FileBrowser to browse into "mass:/" (the USB stick) and launch the FMCB installer

7: Proceed with the installation as described in tons of tutorials

8: Test your new FMCB setup

    Edit:
UK region consoles (SCPH-xxx03) are fully compatible with those of the main European region (SCPH-xxx04), so any European installer volunteer for this region can do the job for you as well. If your swap method really can't boot homebrew discs, then such a volunteer is your best bet.

    Best regards: dlanor

wow cheers for that great reply

but unfortunatly i have had no luck being able to boot my ps1 back ups and havnt attempted to do ps2 back ups cause i diddnt think the tool would work for that with out a mod chip. I have a fat ps2 if that helps as well. im not excactly sure how to do it. when atempting to load ps1 back ups the screen just goes blank.

just to be clear also my swap tool is a slide tool to confuse the ps2 of being a disc in there just in case you thought i had the software swap tool mcjig.. not that you did .

any ways, any help would be hot

Properly used such a tool could still allow you to boot a homebrew disc, though the success rate would depend on both the initial original game disc used (before the swap) and the precise method and timing of the swap. Since I never swap discs this way myself (it damages both the discs and the drive), I can't help with those details.

any ways, any help would be hot
Read the 'Edit:' section I added to my last post a moment ago.

Search ESR for PS2 backups. There's no way to play PS1 backups via FMCB.

Use the search function, seeing how this exact question was answered multiple times. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYf-5Pg6XPo"]YouTube - Add Custom Items to PS2 Browser with FMCB 1.8 'Better Quality'[/ame] And there's no reason to use the usb as a memory card since you can simply back up your memory card saves to the usb via uLE.

Using ESR, you can play backups of your outside region games. If you mean for other purposes, I have no idea.
