I can't seem to get anyone on earth to help me with this so I'll ask here one last time. This time with pics!

I have an old PS2 that has trouble reading backups. It has a new laser and is still having problems.

Before you ask a bunch of redundant questions about how am I making my backups and all the other noob stuff please understand this as a fact.

I am making backups as perfect as anyone on the earth can make them without actually purchasing a DVD Press of my own.

    OK.. moving on.

It turns out my V3 PS2 died, but I have parts to compare it to my V1.
What I'm trying to accomplish is to remove or disconnect the motor that resets the white cogwheel for the laser in my V1 PS2.

To make this more understandable have a look at the pictures.

This first picture is of my V3.
Notice the large white cogwheel only has a metal arm holding the Cogwheel's position.

Now notice the V1 PS2 Cogwheel and notice there is a small electric motor resting beside it. This motor automatically resets the laser to a factory setting no matter how many times you adjust the cogwheel.

Here is a more close-up picture.
    Sorry it is blurry

I am wondering if anyone out there has ran into this problem before and if so how did you correct it? Is there a cable I need to unplug or disconnect? Can I order a new drive tray to replace this that doesn't have the motor? Should I just simply purchase a 400c laser and hope for the best?

    Any input is appreciated.

Donno about the cogwheel (looks completly different on a v7), but have u tried to adjust the laser?

Again - donno if this works on a v1 - But its worth a try.

To get to the laser u unscrew these 2 screws:

Once the screws are off, u can GENTLY remove the laser from those 2 metal rods.
Turn the laser around so u can see the back like so:

There is to small screws on the back of the laser:
-the right one is the dvd adjuster
-and the left one is the cd adjuster.
    Here's another pic:

Importent: Make a note off how your original settings are (like draw a sketch or take a picture).
Make a small adjustment by turning the cd or dvd-adjust-screw(s) (usully a little to the right... or left ... who knows). Remember : make VERY small adjustments like 1/16 turn only.
Once u are done adjustin, turn the laser back, onto the rods, fasten the to small rod-screws, and put the tray-top back on.
Test settings with the cover off (and no screws in the tray-top).... does it work... no? then its back to adjusting again, and again ....and again. At some point itll probably work(fingers crossed).
Dont worry once u have done one adjustment it dosnt take that long to make another.
If u cant get it to work, adjust back to your original settings (hopefull it will still read real ps2 discs).

If your v1 or v3 used to read dvd+-r media u can try cleaning inside the laser - like so:

Hope u get something to work

Thanks for the guide I'll be sure and refer back to it for a reference, but not only have I adjusted the pots on the old laser I actually replaced it with a new laser. I'm reluctant to adjust the pots anymore on this new laser for fear of burning it up but if I can't find a way to turn off that motor then I'll either replace it with a 400c or sell the PS2 and find another one. I'm almost positive I need to stop that motor since it adjusts a permanent height setting of the laser.

If you notice, even the link to the guide you posted shows a drive tray without the motor. This is the first PS2, out of countless PS2's I've modded, that has that stupid motor of death. God I hate sony!!!!

    Victory!!!

I took another chance and completely took the drive tray and PS2 apart again.
There is a 4 wire connector that attaches to the daughterboard/motherboard of the PS2 drive to the cog motor. This connector runs directly to the drive motor of the cog adjustment motor. By gently tugging on it I successfuly removed the cable from the motherboard. I then used electrical tape to cover the ends of the 4 wire connector so it would not short anything out. I'm now able to adjust the cogwheel normaly and should be able to get my backups to play.

I'll let you guys know if I am successful in doing so.

If anyone else runs into this problem below is a picture of the motor and cable that needs to be detached. I recommend you apply a piece of electrical tape to the connector just to be on the safe side. It would probably be better to find the ground wire and actually ground the connecting wire but from my experience tape seems to work ok. This also leads me to believe there are two types of Version 1 PS2's. One without the motor and one with the motor.
