Help with Exploits

OK to start off I went ahead and bought the Swap Magic 3.3 disks and the HDAdvanced 2.0 disks. Yes I know you can get all these for free doing the exploits. But at the time I was new to this whole PS2 modding and I had no idea that you could the exploits. But still want to learn how to do it. I actually want to do it for a friend also.

From what I get this is the thread that you I get most of the tutorial from.
Now is this thread specific to a certain exploit or it is prety much universal. The reason I'm asking is because I know I need to get a hold of the elf file for swap magic and another one for hdadvanced which from what I get are two different exploits. Now from what I get is that you have to have a PS1 disc to make it work. Is it possible to possibly load lets say the swap magic exploit on to the hdd and have just run off the hdd. Any help is greatly appreciated. And I some people might post to use the search button first and believe me I have tried. But in a way for somebody that is new to this all this PS2 mod lingo is sometimes confusing and overwhelming to the point that sometimes I dont know what a certain mod does.
