FMCB on old model ps2 –
Sorry for the noob post, I used search and browsed and came up empty.
I think I have a SCPH-100xx model ps2. I successfully installed FMCB but it doesn't appear that ESR works. I'm sure I made the ISOs correctly and burned them correctly, using TDK DVD-r's burned at 4x. I put in a backup, boot into the main ps2 menu with the options installed by fmcb, select ESR and then it says loading and just goes black. I've given it plenty of time to load.
My old scph-30001 also has trouble with ESR.Try using better media, cleaning ur laser, or changing the laser.
I read somewhere else that you have to do significantly more work to get it to function properly on an old model. these extra steps aren't listed, and i was wondering what they are :-/
Not sure if this will help but I have an older ps2 that refuses to play blank media of 16X speed. (black screen) If I use older media that is 8X speed It plays all brands without problems (have no idea why). But might be worth a try.
Did you patch the iso with esrpatcher?
If you really had that version of PS2, then it is a Japanese console and worth some serious coin to collectors. It also would only have a PCMCIA slot and not a HDD bay.

If this is not what you have then please check a version chart to find out.
If it has a HDD bay I would just get a Net Adaptor and use HDL .8b-c on it to avoid the laser problems altogether.
I'm definitely mistaken :-/ sorry
I think it's a version 3 or 4, I'm going to find out first thing tomorrow and let you guys know. It was one of the first ones sold in the U.S..
It does have the hard drive bay, bigbro. Could I get a link to an install for this? I have an old hard drive, it's my girlfriend's usb external.. im guessing the chances of that being compatible are low at best.
savov: isos are patched with ESRpatcher.
Any advice on laser cleaning? Never done such a thing before. I have to open the case right
I would take it apart to clean it, but you could use the disc based methods. If you use the disc based method make sure to clean the disc tray first as the little brushes could actually pick up dirt from the tray while spinning and put it onto the laser. The disc based method actually requires you buy the laser cleaning disc, taking it apart doesn't. It just requires a few different phillips screwdrivers and a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol.
youtube has tons of disassembly and cleaning/ adjusting videos for both slim and fat PS2s.
Does the ps2 play original games and movies ? If so then the laser should be fine.
Some updated information for you guys,
Model is SCPH-300001. I have free mcboot 1.8 installed and I have the ESR version that has the silver screen with the different options for booting the disc.
When I get to the ESR screen, the ps2 tries to read the disc, and the thing at the bottom of the ESR screen says "detecting media" or something like that. Then after a minute or two, it says unknown media format. If I try to launch the disc, it will not play. Again, game HAS been patched with ESR patcher. 100% sure my rip/patch was successful and correct.
When it tries to read the disc, something in the ps2 really sounds like it's struggling to work. It's somewhat noisy.. not loud, but it makes noises noticeably different from when it reads a normal disc.
I'm burning at 4x speed with TDK discs. I have also tried 8x and 2x with several different iso's. As an interesting note, on my first fmcb install two days ago i was able to get a friend's backup copy of killzone to run. It was burned to a sony dvd-r, which I'm going to go buy today. After that first successful attempt it would not run again. Perhaps it got scratched.
So regardless thank you all for your time and for reading my posts, and your willingness to help.
