Does softmodding damage your PS2?

So there are these guys in my country who are hard modding everything. They've worked in the field for years, they work well, they are respected. I've heard from one of them that softmodding may lead to laser damage. I assumed he was referring to the fact that hardmodding v9-v12 units usually includes the Romeo fix, while softmodding without it means trouble. Fair enough. Now another guy tells me he only does hard mods because softmodding will eventually lead to a corrupt firmware. Has anybody heard anything about this? Is there any reason softmodding a v7 console, like mine, would damage anything?

The SOFTMOD itself will NOT harm your PS2. It's software that runs from a memory Card.

The only thing on a PS2, that would be damaged OVER TIME, would be the laser from the strain of backed-up disks. Using cheap DVD+/-r disks.

Well, there are a few reasons for hard-modders, especially on other consoles (on PS2 they are mainly; loading of unpatched PS1-, PS2-CD&DVD-Backups, DEV,-Modes & V-Mode-Fixes...).
On PSP and PS2, I would say there are more PROs in softmodding it.

Nope, softmodding a PS2 has nothing to do with the laser, except maybe the system-initialisation. But that wouldn't damage your laser.

The BIOS, a.k.a. 'Firmware ' you refer to here, doesn't reside on a (re-)flashable 'ROM'-Unit (atleast not in a PS2). It is 'read-only', so nothing you can destroy a.k.a. 'brick' (is an often used term thought) here.

No. Every-time it was just a rumor, that an uncle heard something from the sister of a friends doughter, which was on a hacker-convention/at a friend/anywhere, where she saw it and is 100% certain about it...

I never saw a real proven bricking-report (and even if there are bricking-reports, they are questionable), because of FMCB (because they are rather raw to find on a PS2 at all, not only in combination with FMCB).
