CogSwap works but not ESR
CogSwap works but not ESR –

I have backed up and patched my games with ESR but they wont load via ESR.elf they will however work if I run CogSwap.elf with a ps2 game and game swap them.
This leads me to believe my dvds and dvd burner are all working well, just something in the ESR not working. I use the ESR disc patcher GUI v0.24a to patch it and burned with imgburn using memorex dvds.
New to the site, been lurking for a few weeks...trying to get this to work the right way. I'm using the free mcboot newbie package from sksapps.

Most likely the problem lies in your use of memorex DVDs, since that is a crap brand. Your games that do boot with CogSwap probably do so with lots of read errors, which may not stop the game from running though they may eventually crash it.
But a similar read error in the ESR patch sector will prevent the game from loading at all, as ESR will not activate its special driver unless that sector is recognizable.
It is best to use only quality media for PS2 games, such as:
Verbatim, Sony, or Taiyo Yuden.

My fat PS2 won't load any ESR discs, this is basically because it simply cannot read DVD-R TOC or initialise the discs. You can hear the drive spinning and clicking trying to read them, however it gives up after about 1 minute. They all work perfectly using cogswap. Bear in mind this is a launch PS2 fat...
Those same DVD-Rs work perfectly as ESR bootable on my PS2 slim.
It could just be your laser and as dlanor said, crap media. In my experience, the FAT PS2s are VERY fussy about what they will and won't boot. I'd stick to cogswap if they're working, or get yourself a slim to use ESR.

That makes sense, thanks for the tips. I figured the memorex discs were crap compared to verbatim etc. ( I used to use them for 360) but didn't even think about the ESR read errors stopping it from loading while still running on cogswap. I figured it was an issue with my ESR.elf or something.
I'll hit up the store for some new media, I really need to just save and invest the money for a HDD and network adapter. Just sucks it's like $50+ for an adapter and a nice HDD.
I have a SCPH-30001 phatty, I have all the screws out of the case and open it each time I swap so I don't have to use a slidecard :-P (then close it so it doesn't overheat or get dirty)
