hi I'm trying to install free mcboot on a memory card and I can't get it to work

    I have:
a cd with the needed files (got from sksapps or whatever)
    a USB with necessary files
slim ps2 790001 or something (I got it new in 2007)
    and cd ps2 games

whenever I swap te ps2 game for the ulaunch installer cd, I get the 'please insert a ps2 disk'

To install free mcboot to a new memory card, you need either a memory card with free mcboot already on it, or a chipped ps2 console. your model number is fine, but free mcboot only works with DVD games, not CD games.

The tutorial says you need a way to boot the CD,
    Modchips
    SwapMagic retail discs
A Memory Card Exploit thats has Cogswap
Cheat discs such as AR Max or CodeBreaker
A friend with any of the above.
    Which method are you using?

To be exact,... ESR only plays patched DVD-Rs.
...and here he is stucking within the FMCB-Installation, which has nothing to do with ESR.

He also could have used the PS2-Game-Swap-Trick.
That won't need a softmodded MC, nor a hardmod ('Modchip').

Sorry, but with your marginal information we couldn't help you much.
Wether did you stated, which game you've used, nor what you modified in the burned disc, nor where you swap and how, nor...

The games that I have tried are:
Dragon Rage, Harry Potter, Crash Bandicoot, Timesplitters, and Midnight Club Racing

I didn't change anything on the cd, I just followed the guide that I gave a link to in a previous post.

This is what I do to swap the games (same method as I've used for swapping ps1 games with backups)
1: I block off the two sensors (the one that "stops the disk" and the one that makes the ps2 think the tray is closed)
2: Start ps2 with no disk
    3: Go to browser
4: Put the ps2 CD in the tray, pull out the open/close sensor and put it back in
5: Wait for the cd to load, so I see a memory card and PS2 cd in browser
6: Take the PS2 cd out and put the cd I made in the tutorial in the tray
7: Start "PS2 game" from the browser
8: Then it's all like "put a ps2 game in"

    And that's everything I did.
