I don't have a modchip, nor do I have HDLoader or anything that sort.
All I have is:
PS2, Network Adapter, and an IDE Harddrive.
Is it possible to play backed up games from just these?

if you know someone that has a moded ps2 u could do a exploit to run cogswap. all u need is a orginal ps1 game and a memorycard.
when u done the exploit u can also download hdloader and run it from memorycard so you can play games from your hd.
What kind of modded PS2? Any kind?
There are many tutorials on this topic. It's probably better to read the tutorial 1st and then ask questions.
Start from here:
http://psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30475 (Exploit Tutorial for the Total N00B! v1.3)
any kind that will boot a burned cd. but check out the tutorial
If you get a ps1 game (I am sure thats not a problem) and a max drive save device. You are set.
if you don't want to spend money on the max drive then you would need someone with a modded ps2, swap magic ps2, slide tool, or whatever to load the exploit for you.
The max drive can load exploits for you.
)What's a max drive?
Thanks for the tutorial, will look into it.
But I'm thinking to get a cheap mod-chip and THEN use burned HDLoader. Will that work?
Oh, and btw, that guide only works if I have a modded PS2, or a MAX AR, or HDLoader retail.
And I have none of those.
It's simple: there is no escaping the plain fact that you will, at least once, and only once, need to gain access to a ps2 that can boot a burned disc somehow*.
once you have the exploit installed and HDLoader on your memcard, you are all set except for installing burned games, where you'll need to stick the HDD in your PC.
*Exceptions: Retail HDLoader, a memory card save transfer device and any swap magic style things
