Using Launch Elf
OK... so you have Launch Elf on your exploit and want to know how to use it. Here is where we will cover this.
Boot the exploit and let Launch do it's thing.... is it up yet.
Ok once it's up and running it will list the current options available. Not much, but don't worry we will make it into a custom tool for terror.
All it says is
Press the SELECT button and open the menu.
This will open the button setting menu. Here you assign commands to all of the buttons.
DEFAULT is set to allow a command to execute automatically when lauch elf starts... with a 10 second grace period. After loading Launch Elf you have 10 second to press a button on the controller or the default command will activate.
Of course the buttons need no introduction. But take note of the Print File Names Only at the bottom... this will not list the path for the comand just it's name in the main window. Makes it look a little better.
With the screen settings you can change the colors of the text for the app.
Lets setup a few apps to launch with Launch elf.
If you put HD Loader on the MC that is what I'm going to use to show you how to do this.
We will be placing HD Loader under the X button for conveinence. Go down to the X and press CIRCLE (CIRCLE is the action button like in JAP games and X cancels).
Now it lists all the places to find a nice app to run. We need the mc0:. Once in here you need to go to the system diretory and find HDLOADER.ELF or whatever it's name is that you want to run. then select it. With the app selected the config menu will come back up with the changes made.
Lets do some moer exploring. Lets change the start button. Go select the START and then go to MISC/.. Nice huh.. select FileBrowser. Changes reflected and one more comand to setup to make this complete.
Select the TRIANGLE button and find Launch Elf's ELF file. Now remember that it will be BOOT.ELF if it is your boot app. And select it so that you can force a reboot of Launch Elf if you have any problems. Helpful when messingwith the HDD and not all the files are showing up in a directory after pasteing to one.
Now we should be back at the configuration screen. Select OK and the settings will e saved to the SYS-CONFIG diectory on you MC. Remember SYS-CONFIG that we made earlier. Now we are using it again. Don't worry if you didn't do that because Launch Elf will make the directory but it will show up as corrupt data in the PS2 Browser later because it has no icon.
Now finally we can copy that FAPLINK save over. You need a USB drive. Place the FAPLINK directory from you PC onto the USB Drive and then plae it into your PS2 USB slot. Now launch the FileBrowser of Launch Elf and goto mass:/ and ther you go the files are there. Tag the FAPLINK directory with the X button and press R1 to bring up the menu. Select Copy and then press TRIANGLE until you are at the root of the system. Select mc0:/ and perss R1 to bring up the menu again. Now Paste the files here. Voila. you copied the save over.
Using HD Loader
This program is straight forwad in use and shoud not really need much in the way of instructions.
After making sure that the HDD is installed properly, set to master and connected. You need to load HD Loader to format the HDD so that the proper partitons for the PS2 and HD Loader are made. After the program loads it should just detect the HDD and then ask if you want to format it. "Of course I do, I can't use it unless you do."
This may take a different amount of time for each size of drive used... mine took about 3 minutes to complete.
Then HD Loader will load and you can install games, delete games, rename games, and play games. There is a bug wit HD Loader that after installing a game and you try to install another it will tell you that there is no more space on the drive. Even if you can see and it displays that there is room it will not copy. Not much of a deal just reload the app and it will work. I've also had some luck with starting to install a game then canceling and starting again to get it to see the space correctly, but this has worked just a few times.
Using *** HDD Format
This one you should be careful with... it can delete as well as create partitions. It is not used for putting games on the drive though. It can be used to delete HD Loader partitions and make new partitions for files you wish to store and apps to run from the HDD.
There are 4 options in the right window for you to use. CREATE, EXPAND, RENAME, REMOVE.
Remember the +PGEN partition that we mounted earlier. That partition was made with *** HDD Format. HDD Format places a "+" infront of the partitions that it makes.
All partitions are set at multiples of 128MB... 128, 258, 384, 512... etc... If you put in a size that is not in multiples 128 it will round it to the next size. If you put 900 it will set it at 896, if you enter 1000 it will round it to 1024.
I'm not sure how to use the first time format of the tool... I used HD Loader and I have no extra drives to test with. If anyone has any info on setting up a new drive with *** HDD Tool please PM me with the info for the thread.
I tried the program you gave me and it did not work. It is a seagate ST310014ACE from a xbox. I took all the files and folders off of it through ftp and all that is left is the partitions.
Just got it to format through the *** tool I think, it tells me it is formated successfully, press "ok". When I press ok, it tells me "fatal error, failed to retrieve files system". When I load up hdloader, it tells me the hd needs formatted, this is after the *** tool told me it is formatted.
Tried putting xbox info on the drive so there was something there. It will not allow me to move any files. I tried formatting the hd through ftp and it wont let me do this either ( I have done this before through ftp).
Just tried anothe ps2 and same problems occur. Some programs work and others dont. Cant format hd, faplink on ps2, the screen jumps. I am at a loss everything I try does not work.
OK.. the new verion of FAPlink does this to me too... just press X and it will fix its self (I'd say it starts in PAL)
as for the hardrive it's alerady formatted.... you probably need to destroy the partition information... try this DOS app... just make sure you know how to use it before you do... It will destroy any partition type and rebuild the drive and rewrite the MBR.
This will hopefully work for you. If not ... well you know the drill...
My tutorial is on hold for the weekend and my reponses may be delayed.... My family is having Xmas today and I'm taking the kids shopping with their money they get tomorrow....
Found the hd problem, it was locked. I had to use my xbox to unlock it. So, to everyone who is using a xbox hd, dont forget to UNLOCK IT! I got almost everything running. I just need to play around with the programs now to learn how they work. Please keep up the tutorial, I feel I'm not the only one you are helping. Thanks Zabolyx have a good christmas.
I completely overlooked the fact that you said it was an Xbox drive... yeah I'm learning how to do that as well and know all about the locking setup...
As for the tutorial... I'm off all day tomorrow and will begin work on it again....
OK... it's about damn time I have some time to work on this....
First off you need to know how to make an ISO file that you can use... I will not cover this at the moment and/or maybe never...
Firing up the FAP Link Server on your MC or HDD... (use the newest version)... and remeber that at the moment it dowsn't support files over 2GB....
Now after the server is up and running fire up the FAPLink Client program for Windows. should look like this....
Pretty simple interface... tyoe in the PS2 IP that you assigned with the config file in the FAPLINK save that you made earlier....(of course, if you made one).
Find the ISO file that you want to upload to the HDD and then give it a name... (FAPLink doesn't like for there to be spaces in the HD Loader game name that you are making.. not a problem you can always rename it with HD Loader later)
Then connect and install.... it will show the progress on the PC and give feedback on the PS2 screen...
there are a few problems yet with this program... sometimes it doesn't always make the changes needed in the HD Loader setting partition... so the game won't show up in HD Loader... just run *** HDD Tools and delete the HD Loader Settings partition... this will force HD Loader to search the HDD and rebuild it's settings and game list when it starts up for the first time after you delete the partition....
DON'T WORRY... it will take a few minutes and will not delete any of the games that you have installed....
nice tutorial m8..
but got question, regarding savebuilder, - i went to add the file icon and icon.sys and history and the files i created.. and my problem is that i can not see the icon on the savebuilder is this normal...?
one more question, i got some pics here to put as my save icon but there not 128x128 bitmap and wonder what simple tool (not adobe photoshop) i need to crop this pics and resize it to 128x 128...
I've noticed this on occasion.... try saving the file and/or clicking double clicking the icon file in the program.....
an ol' image editor should work.. I think even paint will let you resize an image... I usually use NeoPaint... simple program... and start with a 128x128 image size....
dont work mate, eventhough i 2x click it, dont know why...
does bmp2icon is only the tool i can use to make icon or tis ther other tool...?
(bmp2icon is old thats why its doesnt work well..)
ill try paint if it do resize or other tools...
