A 'loader', like HDL or OPL but for PS1 games, implies using the PS2's native PS1 support for the gameplay, which is not the case here.

What ffgriever has written (a working beta already exists) is a full-blown PS1 emulator named PS2PSXe that executes with the console still 100% in PS2 mode, allowing normal use of all homebrew device drivers and utilities such as GSM.

This has, for example, allowed me to play FF7 on my PS2 with the disc images stored on a PC and accessed over LAN, and using the 1080i video mode of my HDTV set for the FF7 game screen.

But the PS2PSXe emulator still needs additional work before a proper non-beta release, as it does not contain any sound implementation as yet, and ffgriever is still not quite satisfied with the GPU emulation of the beta version. So it will be a while yet before a proper release.

    Best regards: dlanor

There are a couple of reasons why PSXLauncher could not work for you (assuming you're doing everything correctly).

    1. You have the wrong console version, PSXLauncher only works on V9-15 consoles.
    2. The backup you're trying to play is from a different region to your TOC disc.

There may be some more, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

As for the reason for why a PSX "Loader" as dlanor describes will not be possible, you need to understand that the PS2 uses the PSX backwards compatibility hardware to take on some ancillary responsibilities when it's running native PS2 code. Likewise, any hardware that wasn't present in the PS1 (like USB/LAN) is unavailable when the console is in PSX "mode".
In a nutshell, the PSX compatibility hardware cannot be used to run PSX code while the PS2 kernel is loaded, and when the PSX kernel is loaded, the PS2 hardware is unavailable. As such, any effort to load PSX games from a PS2 application must use native PS2 code, in this case, an emulator.

On another note, it may be possible to use original PSX Swap Discs, such as PS-X-Change, in combination with a suitable swap method.

That is not true, I have had the PSXlauncher work on my Version 4, and my Version 7 NTSC consoles...

    Really?
Then PSXlauncher must patch/disable the PS1Logo-Check on those old models.

Yeah I swapped them, when it said to swap.

I did this with my backup of Castlevania SOTN.
