Hi my friend gave me his broken ps2 the other day and it wouldnt even turn on, but managed to unjam the dvd drive and now everything works except the dvd drive has the DRE problem. I found a tutorial to fix it but it still doesnt work. Are there any exploits that do not require a cd to activate? Also, it it possible to transfer games through ftp onto the hard drive like with xbox?

non-disc exploit: no, no non-disc exploits. you can get a modchip though.
install via FTP: yes, but it's slow. i'm not sure exactly which program you use but i think it's related to HDL-dumb... look for that.
myself, i alwasy put the hdd into a computer or use my USB caddy (which is slow cause i only have USB1, but ok if im not dying to play the game right now)

just replace the laser,i'm sure a hard drive would cost more (unless you have a spare one)

You'll need a LAN adapter too
Given how crap ps2 lasers are and how often they need to be replaced it still might end up being cheaper in the end (HDD's are very cheap these days).
However, you will be unable to play some games, since hdloader is not 100% compatible.
