My guess as to where he obtained it is on ebay from a guy who sold me the 3DS dev kit I had for a bit. Seller just made another sale a few days ago (and he told me he had a wii dev unit), so I believe this one might be it. It's not often that nintendo dev stuff just pops up; I'm assuming that my suggestion is at least fairly likely.
What are the differences if you buy a devkit second hand and actually getting it from nintendo? And do you think you can link me to the seller's page?

Believe it or not some muppet tried to trade it in at a blockbuster video when I was at the counter, obviously they would never take such an item :)
Ahh. Nice. I'd recommend posting this all over gbatemp if you haven't already. You might get lucky enough to get on the front page, then from there news would propagate outwards to other sites. I managed to get about 2000 views on my 3DS dev unit in a day like that.
I haven't got the needed posts to trade on GBATemp unfortunatelty :(
