Our good friend and Droopy Dog impersonator Senator Joseph Lieberman was part of the "2005 Video Games Report Card" conference on videogame violence today. I happened to catch it on C-Span just as they were showing footage from some of the "M" rated games. Here is a portion of their claims...

"Using data generated by PSVratings, a content-based ratings system measuring actual levels of profanity, sex, and violence, we found that games in 2004 were on average more violent, contained more sexual content and had more profane language when compared to games from the late '90s. In the '90s only 16% of the M-rated games contained any profanity at all and only 33% contained sexual content. By 2004 all (100%) of the M-rated games contained some level of profanity and sexual content. The actual figures shot through the roof. The games we analyzed from last year were 30 times more likely to contain profanity than those from the '90s, and the average prevalence of sexual content increased a whopping 800%. Kids are six times more likely to see nude or partially nude figures in M-rated video games today than they were in the late 1990s. Yet the ratings haven't changed."

I could point out how ridiculous it is to be comparing data from 10-15 years ago when we were all playing Super Nintendo (Damn, that Mortal Kombat!) but one comment I happened to catch pretty much sums up what colossal ****tards these guys are. They were showing clips from the game "F.E.A.R." and someone made the statement "this is something new we are seeing in games..." Now, get ready for this. You won't believe what these devious game programmers are exposing your poor helpless impressional children to. Are you ready? CANNIBALISM. Lock up your kids! Take those video game systems away from them before they start EATING each other!!!

HAHA! That is so much shit. Me and my boy play games ALL THE TIME. As a parent all you do is monitor what he can and can't play/watch. You bring them up right from a young age, and they'll know the difference between what they play and what is real life.

My kids have been playing those games for the past 2-3 years so were aged11 and 12 when they started. I can report that they have not yet tried to kill anyone, blow up anything, and all neighbours properties and vehicles are intact.

Where these folks get their ideas from I do not know. Kids know that these games are just that and nothing more, this is just about as bad as the E.U's regulation on the definition of a banana.

Actually, all my friends agree that if it wasn't for violent video games, I probably WOULD be kiling people and blowing things up.

I would really start to fund the removal of chairman and director at http://www.rockstargames.com

Just to make an impact on the industry.

It's not just games, it's about programming acceptance of violence.

computer games are only a refelection of the values of the society that created them... this "report card" acts as if socities' changing values is something new, well its not. only recently it was considered crude for a woman to show her legs in public or to go to the beach without clothes...

This is about changes short term, but this in the long term is about christian fundamentalism making the upgrowing generation used to violence and it will eventually accept violence as conflict solving, probably through war.

Good point. Anyone who knows who Lieberman is knows he is genuinely creepy. In fact, I've theorized for years that many of the top government officials are really vampires. At the very least, he is proof that the Targzissians do exist.

Too much emphasis in our society on blocking sex, but encouraging violence. If it were my world, R movies wouldnt be on TV, but hardcore sex would be on nickelodeon. While I think people should be able to play what ever the **** they please, I do beleive the glorification of certain behaviour is bad for society. Violence isnt inherintly bad, nor is sex, its context, and no rating system can objectively rate context, only subjectively.
Theres a huge difference between me killing a bunch of people say in Call of Duty 2, than there is of making it cool to cool cops in GTA. While I love GTA, i see where it can be damaging.
People who make it cool to be social low lifes, such as 50 cent, are the problem with society, not violent video games.
    But remember, DOOM caused Columbine....LOL
