a bit of history...
In the days of the original PlayStation, there was a site called "xiaNaix Evil HQ." It was legendary for posting PSX/PS2 hacking information and files that Sony did not want you to have. Sony eventually shut it down. The PS2 arrived, and a site called PS2Ownz took over the scene. Many people took a disliking to the way the site was being run and the attitude projected by the administrators. Around this time, xiaNaix was contacted by a guy named Greg Nolle. Greg was the owner of a site called PS2Newz. Take a look at the original PS2Newz site, courtesy of the Internet Archive...
Greg no longer had time to invest in running the site and wanted xiaNaix to merge his "Evil PS2 HQ" site into PS2Newz, to create a supersite for the PS2 community. Together, he figured, they could knock PS2Ownz down a few pegs. xiaNaix, unfortunately, did not feel he could do the site justice enough to take on the monster that was PS2Ownz. He was then contacted by a long-time fan of the xiaNaix site by the name of Guichi. When he heard about the merger proposal, he encouraged xiaNaix to accept, offering to do everything he could to make it happen. He too was tired of the commercialism seeping into the PS2 scene via sites like PS2Ownz. Guichi and xiaNaix set out to create the ultimate community for PS2 hackers.
The new PS2Newz was born! Take a look at an early capture of the site, again courtesy of the Internet Archive...
Note the names of the three original administrators, Guichi, xiaNaix, and Asskick. It was our intention to provide the PS2 community with a place to share information, files, and just hang out, in a friendlier atmosphere than what was being provided elsewhere. We also vowed not to turn PS2Newz into a commercial venture like other sites in the scene were doing.
The site grew larger and required a bigger and better server. We then set out to find someone who shared these viewpoints and who would be willing to finance the PS2Newz project. Balto, a banished former Ownz moderator, offered to pay for the site's hosting and forum licensing. PS2Newz became known as the premiere site for PS2 modchip and hacking information, scooping others by posting information, modchip hex, and various files most sites wouldn't touch. The ICE team offered their popular free modchip source EXCLUSIVELY though PS2Newz.
Things were going well until the infamous Messiah modchip team came under legal fire. Balto, who was friendly with some of the Messiah team, decided it was no longer safe to actively participate in the site. He became estranged with the administrators and, When it came time to renew payments for the site, we again set out to find someone willing to provide financing.
LOD, long-time friend and owner of New Age PSX Service, stepped up to the plate. He wanted to completely revamp the site and expand coverage to all game consoles. The task of setting everything up was left to Guichi. He worked long and hard and, in just a few weeks, PS2Newz became ConsoleNewz!
Then, things took a turn for the worse. LOD began taking the site in a more commercial direction. He added a section for modchip vendors and signed on several new "sponsorships." He posted a review of a modchip which used the free ICE code, refusing to acknowledge that fact. He objected to the posting of the cracked HDLoader, something Guichi and xiaNaix both felt needed to be shared with the PS2 community. The final straw came when LOD told Guichi that the ICE team would no longer be allowed to post their FREE modchip code via the forums.
Words were exchanged and, when we expressed our dissatisfaction with the direction LOD was taking the site, all former admins were summarily banned from the site, without warning. LOD had taken over sole control of ConsoleNewz! It was a mutiny!!!
We spent the next few days complaining to the hosts and were told there was nothing they could do since LOD is the one paying for the server. Hurt and disgusted by what was happening with "our baby," we decided to re-claim the original PS2Newz domain and create a clone forum. We would use a backup of the ConsoleNewz database made by xiaNaix just before he was banned from the site by LOD. When word got back to LOD, he was enraged. Words were exchanged between he and Guichi via AIM. He sent several threatening emails to xiaNaix. It is his contention that the ConsoleNewz database belongs to him and, if we are going to use it for an old-school PS2Newz site, he has promised to seek legal action. xiaNaix proposed that both sites could exist and the users allowed to decide where their support lay. He asked LOD to remove all of the posts on ConsoleNewz which were made prior to the takeover. LOD flatly refused, again insisting that he OWNED the contents of the database, and throwing out more insults and threats. He then posted on ConsoleNewz insinuating that we had hacked into the site's database and stolen a copy. Not only was this untrue, it was unnecessary. Apparently, he has forgotten that just days before we were still administrators of the site and had made backups almost daily!
It is our opinion that ConsoleNewz has now become stricly a commercial venture. LOD believes that by paying for the site's hosting and forum license, he owns the rights to posts that YOU, the USERS of the PS2Newz/ConsoleNewz community have made on the forum! Yes,
he claims that YOUR posts are now his "PROPERTY"!!! The new ConsoleNewz administrative staff is being comprised of modchip vendors and other "sponsors." I'm sure you can imagine what the database full of your email addresses is worth to companies like these. It is no wonder they are lining up to take part in LOD's new business venture.
By teaming up with several "heavy hitters" in the scene and resurrecting PS2Newz, the ORIGINAL ADMINISTRATORS hope to put the site back where it belongs... into the hands of the users who comprise it ... NOT modchip vendors and people looking to make money off of the userbase. This is not a money making venture for us. We are, and always have been, passionate about the PS2 scene. We want to form a COMMUNITY for sharing information and files, not sharing your email addresses with modchip companies and spammers.
Our new PS2Newz site has most of the logins intact so you do not need to re-register. Come participate in what we hope will be an OLD-SCHOOL PS2 site with no commercial potential. ;)
Note that we will still be hosting the ONLY official ICE team forums, as well as the ITM code forums. We have also hooked up with xbox-scene.com to provide a network for PS2 & X-Box users!
It's good to be home! :nana:
