WARNING: 3.42/3.50FW consoles spotted in the wild!

Several members of this forum and others have been reporting buying brand new PS3 Systems that come with 3.42FW. Systems above 3.41 cannot be jailbroken.

While not all systems in stores are 3.42FW and people have still reported buying 3.40FW systems, the increased reports of 3.42FW systems can only be a sign of things to come with Sony attempting to combat the jailbreak on all fronts, and signals an incoming scarcity of consoles with 3.41 or below.

If you or someone you know buys a system that comes with 3.42 please post as much information as possible in this thread. (Including box description, barcode, other codes, SKU, etc. Pics plz!)

Just got a ps3 160gb from the zellers moonlight madness and it came with 3.42

you can tell the new 3.42 firmware from the older 160 gb because the back of the box has a playstation move ad and the front has a netflix streaming ad on the front. the sku upc is 711719841807

Went ahead and took my chances on the holiday bundle currently in stores (includes Infamous and NHL 11). System firmware is 3.50 so it looks like I'll be taking it back and hunting for a used model.

I have ordered 4 brand new 160 gig slim ps3 systems from newegg.com . All came with 3.40 on them until now. I recieved this system Friday and just opened it up to mod it. To my surprise 3.42 was already installed on it. Does anyone know of a series of sn or bar codes to avoid? Guess I will have to go in the store from now on instead of getting free shipping and no tax from newegg.

A friend of mine bought the limited edition blue one that came with GT5 from Hong Kong within the past week, and it came with 3.42.

I can also confirm this. We decided to check real fast. the model is the same as listed above....Last four digits of sku are different though. Netflix on one side, move ad on other. 160gb comes with uncharted 2 and pixel junk shooter. Was purchased from Wally world on black Friday.

3.42......mega bummer. Now to decide either to try and return it and find as good a deal/buy a PS Jailbreak/ or Just wait and hope that an open downgrader comes out before too long.

i bought one from currys with 3.42 two weeks ago. just look to see if it mentions 3d on the box or psmove steer clear.

Well I bought the 160GB black friday bundle from amazon and it came with 3.42 .

Brand new 320gb bought today from toys r us - uk and has 3.42 installed. Now about to order the JB downgrade dongle. I can confirm that the PS3 bought this morning was totally sealed and unopened yet still is 3.42fw.

well we all saw this coming. Its not like they ship out the ps3s with the original software on them that they all first started on otherwise mine would have come with 1.50 instead of 2.20 when I bought it. Someday there will be new ones out there that come straight from the factory with a new 4.00 software. This is in now way a tactic to fight jailbreaking its just normal business sense. you have a new firmware you might as well ship the new units with the new firmware so when little Johnny gets it on Christmas he doesnt have to spend 20 min updating to play gran turismo.

Interesting that the GT5 bundle came with a 3.42 firmware PS3 when the game itself requires an update to 3.50….so u have to update the machine with the disk just to play the game that came with the system….THEN install the game…kinda sucks

My friend bought a brand new 160 Gb console from Singapore somewhere around October 25th, 2010, and when he brought it home to India, he was surprised that his PS3 console had 3.42 in it

A way to be able to spot this is using the Model and Serial Number. If we can get a few people that bought these system to post the last four of the serial we could get a better idea, or maybe the first four or something like that.

I agree, we'll live. I am disappointed that i am one of the ones that waited too long to get a <3.42 PS3, but it's not any real problem. As i pointed out in my other post; There are alot of options that still allow us to enjoy homebrew on the PS3.

I'm just glad that the scene is what it is, and there as many people dedicated to it that there are.
