The Ultimate 3D Experience: Stereoscopic 3D Gaming on PlayStation 3 Available Tomorrow
Hi everyone! The moment is here — starting tomorrow, high-definition stereoscopic 3D gaming will be available in your very own living rooms! As you already know, all PlayStation 3 systems are already equipped with everything they need to play stereoscopic 3D games. Thanks to a free firmware update released this past April, the PS3 system is the only console on the market that can support full stereoscopic 3D gaming — right from your living room, and with no additional charge.

Well, let's see how many PS3's crash with another update, and other suprizes! -- Rumors there is also a price drop to $199?

at 199$, it will be the console to catch. Really that will be a price point where every single person will want to have one.

That's where you're wrong. With all its current limitations, and with Sony KNOWN to be planning new nefarious schemes for screwing their customers over to press more money out of them, I wouldn't buy a PS3 at half that price even (except perhaps to sell it with a 'markup').
For me a PS3 would be a total waste of my time, and I've got better things to waste it on.

Shoot if they drop it to $199. It's only 10 dollars more than a DSiXL, o_o. That would be crazy if they did.

What i read on the official blog comment that 200$ was the price of the stereoscopic 3D goggle.

I might be interested in trying this once for the novelty value, but I can't imagine how it would substantially improve anything.
Incidentally, doesn't this mean that either the rendering load must be doubled or the effective frame rate must be cut in half (since stereoscopic images work by presenting a different image to each eye)?

I think you are right. Both RAM usage and the workload to render a given product of resolution and framerate should be doubled, except for the storage RAM needed for the 3D object definitions, since those can be shared for perspective processing of both 'eyes'. so at the edge of full PS3 capabilities either resolution or framerate must be cut down to render the same stuff in 3D.
That is unless the designers instead reduce the complexity of simultaneous on-screen activities, which is the path I suspect they will choose instead, as reducing either resolution or frame rate is suicidal in the current game market. So many of the new 3D games will most likely be graphically and action-wise simplified, relative to corresponding older 2D games.
Best regards: dlanor
