Here is a strange comment regarding future PSP games from a interview with a Sony spokesman (Rob Dyer):

And we also believe that there's a way that you will be able to, not stop, but slow down the piracy in the first 30 to 60 days from a tech perspective. There's some code that you can embed that we've been helping developers implement in order to get people at least to see a 60-day shelf life before it gets hacked and it shows up on BitTorrent.

That's been the biggest problem, no question about it. It's become a very difficult proposition to be profitable, given the piracy right now.

If the game detects itself being ripped and hacked it releases a toxic gas sadly under federal laws Sony is only allowed to knock people out for 60 days.

They are stupid for announcing it like that since that will just make it so hackers will want to hack it sooner. That pretty much means the first game to have it will be leaked early and hacked before the game hits shelves.

Not stupid at all. That's actually quite clever. They know it will be breached but they actually want to measure how long it might last. If it does not last long enough, they just go back and put more effort in it.

System Software 6.xx, PSP3000 and the PSP GO been proving quite challenging so far.

Some of the people behind the real achievements (hacking wise) are discouraged atm. And in my honest and humble opinion, the hacking and piracy almost killed the PSP platform in 2007-2008.

And the PSP did not recover yet.
Big developers reactions to lack of profit are slow but steady.

So saying that piracy never hurt the PSP is insane.

honestly though I hate PSP games the only reason I ever owned any of the psps I had (3) was for the homebrew all the apps and just the hacking process itself was fun the games could never hold my attention though they were just meh.

i think it will work, because not many people care about psp anymore.

i think most interest moved to ps3, or people just got fed up with childish attitude or various people involved with psp hacking, and users too.

l_oliveira: Protecting the system is totally different then hacking a protected game. With a system they need to find an exploit that they can use to get in the system to hack it or a way to inject code into the system. With hacking a game all that is needed is right there and you don't need some exploit to access it and all you need to do is copy the data off of the disk.

Just to let you know piracy didn't kill the psp the crappy game lineup did. I don't even care about psp games and the only ones I have really liked were ports of older games. Like Riku I bought my psp for the homebrew and not the psp games. When Sony added psx emulation I was really happy because Sony actually brought out something that was decent for the psp.

rather the cause for the lack of PSP game development is in piracy. for example, Epic games (gears of war and unreal tournament developer) stated that piracy was the sole cause for the studio to abandon game development the for PC platform and to jump-shift to the console platform because that is where the bigger profits are.

unreal tournament on the PC back in 00's was the sickest multi-player game at that time.

the PSP homebrew library remains unrivaled and the practical versatility that it has is just plainly ridiculous.

don't get me wrong, the PSP has good PS1 ports but it also has really good PSP games. PSP game development has slowed down a lot and part it is due to the absence of umd capability and the minimal game library in PSN for the PSP-GO.

i don't think that sony will allow the PSP to die just yet. it still has a breath of redemption left and it can materialize in the PSP-2 (maybe it will be unveiled at E3). besides, i think that my slim PSP will outlast both my 360 and PS3 as long as it isn't abused.
