Sony Corp. this week said it will release a $200 stand-alone Blu-ray disc player ready to playback 3D titles following a firmware upgrade.

The BDP-S470 via software update will enable playback of 3D Blu-ray titles that will utilize 3D HDTV technology.

The hardware will include Bravia Internet Video, Wireless LAN functionality, and ability to use an iPhone or iPod Touch as a remote control.

The BDP-S470 will be sold this month at U.S. retail.

Sony in Jan. announced the BDP-S570 3D Blu-ray disc player, which will include 3D functionality out-of-the-box without a firmware update.

The Playstation 3 hardware can also add 3D functionality via system update.
