First off, the $20 price tag *is* too expensive, (especially since regular DVD's are the same price).
The only thing that this will REALLY do is drive down the price of portable DVD players (which all have larger screens and play normal DVD's).
If I were going on a trip and wanted to watch a movie... i'd choose a portable DVD player that comes with a remote, and for which i can find cheap movies in most stores (even supermarkets carry dvd movies).
I've also used my portable dvd player as a standalone player (for their HUGE HDTV) when I was visiting family this past christmas. If Sony REALLY wanted to be cutting edge, then they would add this sort of feature for the PSP (AV out)
IMO they were off to a bad start when they missed Christmas. The DS has a big head start on them both in price and time. I can't help but feel like the PSP is going to be yet another failed attempt at competing with Nintendo's portables. Sony has absolutely screwed themselves at every opportunity.

Where else can you play a DS cartiridge but a DS.. yes i understand that the PSP in no way can compare to the price of a DS ( I havent seen a psp in action so i dont know how much more of a beast it is) but i think with the techonoly used in this new media it will either catch on or drive down the price of its competitiors DVD, and other mass storage... Just a guess may be wrong but well will have to wait untill the end of the next few quarters to find out.
That's a very bad move imho. If they don't bring down the price tag, they'll end up like the minidisc. It'll sell some (cause there's so many dumb ass on earth ) but most are gonna stick with big memory stick and convert their own dvds...
Sony is thinking their customers are idots a bit too often for my taste.
I'll second the portable DVD player idea too, those are insanely cheap now with big and good screens.
last thing : who want to buy a very inferior product for the same price? (ie 320x240 MPEG4 SP vs DVD)
Certainly not me, it reminds me all those shitty online music store selling crappy aac/wma at near the price of the CD...
let me tell u what i'v read about this issue

There are two rumors
one says that UMDs are basically DVDs cut down literally to 60mm. This explains the DL UMDs.....so who knows maybe one day some chinese company will release 60mm blanks made from DVD-Rs u can burn using the regular burner n then put it in the plastic cover that UMDs use. "i remember a couple of years ago imation made mini CDs looked exactly like MDs with the exact size "30min" n u can burn them using ur CD-R burner"

second rumor says that sony will release a recorded later when the PSP sales drops. When one of SCEI executives asked about the UMDs he/she didn't deny the possiblity of a UMD recorder. Sony made recorders for the MD and HiMD and sony would follow this trend and release a recordable disk....u know how the company lost sales because of the shortage of pstwos in xmas and the delay for the release of PSP in europe...i guess they'll be desperate for money so they'll end up releasing such device to drive sales up

I remember reading about a possible dmd writer as well. However i dont know if it will sell at all. I think if the psp does well, the umd devices will be available. it wouldnt surprise me one bit if they did make such a device it would be japan only.
I also agree that these UMD moveies would be a wast of money.. I mean think about it.. you can put a whole DVD movie onto a memory stick Duo anyways.. So really whats the point in payin for a movie when you can rip it and put it on a stick..
Man, Sony needs a reality check if they think most people are gonna be willing to pay $20-$30 per UMD movie. With the pricing of the PSP bundle ($250) and the ridiculous pricing of their UMD movies ($20-$30), games ($40-$50), and Sony branded memory cards (1 kajillion dollars), the PSP is looking to be a major money drain.
Most of Sony's customers are "idiots" so to speak. They like convenience, they like the brand, they like the build quality (which to the average consumer is amazing) and they either don't know or don't have the time to convert their own movies.

The UMD movies is just an example of good cross-selling. Movies sell consoles, consoles sell games and so forth. With the amount of planned add-ons, they have an oppurtunity to secure many markets.
All new mediums are expensive at first but the price will come down when they need to attract a different customer base.
i beleive that sony is really gonna make this UMD disk unrippable for the sole purpose of $$$. UMD disks wont need that great of quality because look at the screen its going on. 400 megs a movie and it will look great on the PSP screen so why the need for dual layer umds.
As far as buying the movies i think it wont catch on. Why would you want to buy a movie and view it on your psp. Movies and games are 2 different things, games you need more time with in-order to play or because there fun but movies its a hour and a half run through and your done with it. I really dont think it will be that great as sony thinks it is and for 20 to 30 a pop no way,... rather get gran turismo for psp.
As far as a blank UMD. NOOO wayy in hell. Sony will only make UMD's exclusive for its SONY portable line and even possibly Ps3. Blank UMDS can lead to "you know what" and we dont want "you know what" to happen. It will only be exclusive to sony and nobody else will market it as there own.
