Well the CES is almost here, with alot of new toys to show off and alot of nice fancy press releases from the big boys.

One of the first ones coming out of the door, is talk of Sony planning their own 3D network to better push the next-step of 3D onto the awaiting masses.

Remember the PS3 has already been stated by Sony to be able to handle 3D with just an firmware-update in the near future.

Also most people know by now, that Avatar has already cracked a Billion dollars in box-office tickets worldwide in less then 17 days, so it looks like 3D is the future.

Thanks to CVG for this nice news update, here is their write-up in full:

Huge collaboration formed to push 3D TV in your face
    ---------------------------------------------------

All the talk of 3D gaming may just have got a little more serious with Discovery Communications, Sony and IMAX joining forces to launch the first dedicated 3D television network.

The plans were unveiled at CES, which is going on at the moment Las Vegas, and they're aimed at delivering a high-quality 3D experience to home television sets. The network will begin in the US before being rolled out wider afield.

Sony boss Sir Howard Stringer said, "Sony is the only company with expertise in every part of the 3D value chain. It is clear to us that consumers will always migrate to a better and richer entertainment experience, and together we are determined to be the leader in providing that around the world."

The press release blurb goes on to say that the 3D network will feature "high-quality premium content from genres that are most appealing in 3D, including natural history, space, exploration, adventure, engineering, science and technology, motion pictures and children's programming."

Would you upgrade your box for 3D telly and 3D gaming?

I like the 3D idea and it would be even better if they came up with a 'panoramic' display or maybe even a holographic display. I would build a room just for gaming if holographic games were ever made.

avatar in 3D was absolutely 'awe'some! i would so pay to have 3D visual entertainment at home. 3D gaming & television will outdate high def by the end of this decade.

so would we need to get a tv that specializes in 3D picture quality or will our current hdtv sets work with a 3D network of channels?

This would be nice, but buying a 120Hz TV is just too expensive, so to hell with that idea right now.

    120hz TV is old-school now.

You need to get into the flow of the 3D being demoed at the CES show.

We are talking now 480hz TV's.

And LG and Samsung are claiming the new technology is better, so price-wise in 2011 you will be looking at about $200 to $300 LESS for the new TV's then what is on the market right now!

I just finished paying for a new 60Hz 40" Samsung LCD TV, but still waiting for Futureshop to ship it to me, since it's delayed for 3 more weeks. I just don't have the money to throw around on this kind of stuff. Even if 3D is great, I doubt I will be buying a new TV next year. What stores here in Toronto carry 480Hz TVs? Futureshop only has 240Hz at best. A 120Hz Samsung is over $200 more than the one I got during the start of the boxing day sales. I did a lot of searching around and Samsung seems to be the safest bet, which is why I choose this TV. I could buy a 120Hz Toshiba for the same price I paid for this 60Hz Samsung, but I'm sure I'd probably regret it later when I realize it's not as good quality.

No you will not regret it. Samsung TV's are great.

I bought one myself on Boxing Day from Future Shop, and it was nuts, got there at 5am, and got out of there at 11am with the last one they had, everyone was buying one.

Of course it was also 60hz, but that is fine now for me, but with everyone buying them for christmas and boxing day that is why you are waiting for one still, you got to wait for the next boat-load from china to arrive.

I am not going to buy another TV until the 480hz's are released next year (you can't find them, they are not ready yet!), those will be better for 3D then the 120hz, much less headache, I have see demo's of both, and the 120hz hurt my eyes after a while, but the 480hz should not, and they claim the 480hz's when out will be $200 to $300 cheaper then the current same size models of the 240hz.

Thanks for the info, I was reading up more on LCDs and also Plasmas and it turns out Plasma TVs are already at 480Hz and have next to 0 lag time, which is why they are best for gaming. But they also have their drawbacks, such as not being good in bright rooms and the quality not lasting as long as LCDs, but those comments might be based on old info from older models, since Plasmas are also getting better with time. I'm sure there is a lot of info out there about TV differences and what works best, but I don't really want to spend that much time on researching it. So yea I think I'll be happy with my Samsung, whenever it gets here. I was just confused why it's another 3 weeks when they were originally supposed to delivery it two days ago, but I was still out of the province at the time.
