If people weren't hating on sony for what they did before, no one would have any issue with the phone stuff at all.

Sony naturally is doing it's best to protect it's interests in a legal manner.

They can't unlock phones locked by carrriers, because they would get in trouble for it, though end users can do it. So their sanctioned unlocker only works then, and where it's legal for the unlocker to work. Of course other unlockers may also be legal, but they are just covering their own butt.

And android is capable of running unsigned apps without rooting it anyway, at the option of the phone maker.

Yes, some people may want to do wireless tethering and buy legit content. Such people will be inconvenienced, but can use alternative means to get their ps1 games onto their unlocked phone.

Of course they don't want the OS rooted while the keys are present because that allows someone to de-drm the games. That's perfectly understandable, and providing a way for people to do what they need to do to get their non piracy related homebrew that needs root to run gives them a legal excuse to shut down more pirate friendly jailbreaks.

Very true because people who unlock their phone can just buy a PS1 game, or use one which they already own and use a emulator to play it (when one is released)... So there really isn't any problem.

But Sony did what they did. There's no point in imagining a hypothetical world where it never happened. It's all relevant now.

you can already do this without unlocking. you can install any program without "jailbreaking" as long as you have the .apk file. all sorts of emulators are already available. I have nes, snes, gba, genesis, n64 and psx emulators running on my play. all running really smooth.

from what I understand this bootloader unlock allows you to root so you can install programs that actually alter the system/os.

can someone clarify something for me. once I do this bootloader unlock I`m no longer able to make purchasing of games for it?

You will lose the ability to purchase and use sony DRMed stuff on the phone if you unlock the bootloader. All other purchases will be fine.

thanks for the reply. not really worthwhile then.

I`m hoping for an update here that will let me sync my psn purchases over to the play. like the minis and ps1 classics I have on the ps3. Don`t see why not as I can do this with the psp, really disappointed that this isnt an out of the box feature.

It's pretty consistent. fwiw Sony Ericcson is not Sony.
If you've been following the court case, then you'll know that all of Sony's subsidiaries are Sony whenever it benefits Sony.
