Sony files New Patents to cover Geohot's PS3 Exploits! –
Sony is stepping up the game now. And covering their legal butt, by filing a patent, which will give them power to stop any attempts of producing anything in regard to Geohot's PS3 exploit. The power of the PATENT! Great idea Sony!
You can read the patent in full over at this site: http://www.faqs.org/patents/app/2010...#ixzz0feEg2cT4
But here is short juicy part for those that love reading patent speak:
Now that was a mouthful. No word yet from Geohot or Xorloser regarding Sony's new move into the legal world of patents to cover their asses.
A method, system, and computer-usable medium are disclosed for controlling unauthorized access to encrypted application program code. Predetermined program code is encrypted with a first key. The hash value of an application verification certificate associated with a second key is calculated by performing a one-way hash function. Binding operations are then performed with the first key and the calculated hash value to generate a third key, which is a binding key. The binding key is encrypted with a fourth key to generate an encrypted binding key, which is then embedded in the application. The application is digitally signed with a fifth key to generate an encrypted and signed program code image. To decrypt the encrypted program code, the application verification key certificate is verified and in turn is used to verify the authenticity of the encrypted and signed program code image. The encrypted binding key is then decrypted with a sixth key to extract the binding key. The hash value of the application verification certificate associated with the second key is then calculated and used with the extracted binding key to extract the first key. The extracted first key is then used to decrypt the encrypted application code."
everybody keeps saying that's protection aganist the exploit.
but can anyone prove that? it's just speculation, and everybody seems to repeat that claim without thinking.
Yep, pure speculation, I guess the only way to know for sure is to ask Sony, but I beat they would not tell you.

my guess is that they are going to change the executable signature process, or patent the existing one, just to make life harder for those who would like to develop uauthorized commercial solutions for ps3.
i think sony is considering that ps3 is finally going to get hacked, so they want to make life harder for those who would like to develop some unauthorized ps3 software and try to make money off it. first, by patenting the signature method, and second - by possibly changing the process.
but would a jap or us patent really mean anything in say China or Russia? i mean i dont think it would be worth a hill of beans if it cant be enforced.

if the recently discovered exploits are when this is about I do not believe they are allowed to patient somebody else idea, naturally Geohot and others is not in a position to challenge it so if so its a pretty low and illegal move that they could easally get by with, but i dose not really matter because modchips are illegal but that dose not even slow people down any
My Christmas decorations aren't coming down.
Im guessing Sony popped out that Patent so 3rd party companies like Datel dont make something and then Patent it to block any legal issue Sony would have raised about it.
This gives Sony a head start on protecting themselves from someone sneaking in some software/hardware and preventing Sony from any legal standings if they did. With the proper patents, Sony can control the market with what works on their console. Of course free homebrew isnt included in the marketing concerns, so Sony would still have to 'fight' any hacks that are made with the same firmware updating they have been on their other consoles.
I dont really think that patent is aimed directly at geohot, but more towards what others might do with it to try making a buck. We've already seen the 'fakes' making websites in an attempt to make a buck....

Basically Sony is patenting their Lock progress, so if someone builds a lock-picker, or gets something to boot on a broken lock, Sony can throw this patent at them, saying you are breaking our patented lock.

Sony must be thinking someone is on the right track if they are protecting their behinds.
But again this is all pure reaching at the stars on both sides, as I don't see any progress on Geohot's side which would enable companies like Datel producing something commerical, as all his work was on older Fatie model in the OtherOS, nothing so far has been broken lock-wise on the GameOS or XMB system.
I agree as Datel is a real good source for taken "ones" hard work and make a profit for them selves..

If anyone can use what has been found/done by geohot it would be them..
In the end $ony is just covering there azz..
Then again if all of this is due to geohot's findings then maybe-just maybe geohot is/has stumbled onto something that geohot has over looked and with that $ony knows geohot could have used what he over looked to fully hack the PS3..
