ok I made the AVCHD coding put the folder in the usb fat32. it still won't read it on the ps3, it can't find it at all.
so im guessing i can convert x264 to avchd then? anyone know the best program to do this?
we need something that will play it from internal drive
totally pointless but mkv is not a codec. Its a container.
You can do this right now by taking tsmuxer, load your mkv into it, and select avchd and it will change it into a playable format for the ps3.
All it really does though is make sure the audio is ac3. The video stream is mpeg 4 anyway.
what is the point in this ap
from what i see ps3 plays these anyway and through a usb stick so wtf
from ps website

yea why the hell not to use mp4 it's far supirior no?
Agreed, this is pointless
Here's what I've been doing for a few months now to get mkv files to work in their full HD and audio (Dolby or DTS).
Load .mkv into MKV2VOB and let it run. Usually takes about 10 minutes or so. Then you are left with a new .mpg file that you're ps3 can stream natively or via ps3 media server. Now if you're anal like me you hate skipping and freezing so to eliminate that I just hilight the movie on my ps3 and press triangle and copy it to the ps3 hdd. That can take some time depending on the size. A typical movie in 720p takes about 20-30 mins to copy, but that whole step is optional. It makes a world of difference for me and I can enjoy my mkv's in all their hd and digital audio delciousness.
This is what I do regularly too and it is an okay solution for the most part. The only drawback is the subs: I can't save my asian horror movies on the ps3 and watch them in full hd glory with subs. Yes, I know I could hardcode them but this would require a processor heavy and lengthy transcode session. And anyway, I want soft subs. Soft subs dammit!

You think we will ever see a way to play .iso movies? That would be nice.
Nothing special here at all, there have been programs for MONTHS that allow AVCHD from USB to be played on PS3, and for even longer there have been thousands of 4gb 1080p .m2ts releases from the PS3-Team on HDME.eu
I will get seriously excited when we get mkv support or anything that lets the ps3 use files over the 4gb fat32 limit!
