Zoned, a forum member over at PS3NEWS has released a simple program to watch AVCHD movie files with subtitles from your Jailbroken PS3 system using your external USB devices.

Thanks to all who have been involved with creating and fixing it.

This is for use with USB devices that contain directories of movies processed with the windows AVCHD manager, it allows the selection of the movie for viewing under the XMB with subtitles if available.

If you dont know how to get your videos into AVCHD format use google.

    Functions

    - Scans connected USB devices for folders processed by the windows AVCHD Manager.
    - Any current AVCHD folder is automatically changed to the movie name as defined in details.txt.
    - Changes the selected movie directory name to AVCHD to allow playback through XMB.
    - Displays custom cover/screenshot icon "ICON0.PNG" if present in the movie directory. Resolution up to 320x176 supported.
    - Allows deletion of movie directories.
    - No FTP or copy mode as I do not see the point when you can just connect your usb device to the pc and copy files that way.
    - No ability to copy to internal drive as AVCHD files do not work from there.
    - This is only version 0.1 as there is more work needed to the code to remove unnecessary portions."

Nice app, but it's more like a proof of concept
They main goal is here, that it's know possible to play movies from external devices, now we need .mkv support

Looks like a very good concept, and very useful for others, i may try this out.

But, i don't want to be jumping on the band wagon here, as this is possible, wouldn't getting .mkv support be possible? I think everyone basically wants .mkv support haha, but it is really useful and it would be awesome instead of converting them to a format for the PS3, like you have to do with the iPhone. To be honest i think we need some kind of a codec pack, but i'm not sure if that's even possible.

I would go this far and say, that .mkv is the only movie format, which is important these days.
But i guess it's really difficult to implent .mkv support, because you have to implent this codec into your ps3.

mkv2vob? how long does it take to convert a movie to vob?

MKV2VOB always give me the same error,AVCHD with all transcoding codecs:
    "Error transcoding video"
    Anyone got a better program?

Edit: ok I got some mkv's to actually transcode but 480p videos still give me the error

    Well, sounds nice.

So you convert the files, copy them to your usb harddrive and play them with this ps3 media player ?

Split them into 2 oder 3 parts?
Probably you won't even recognize the swith beetween the files.

Years ago, when we had to watch movies on CD using SVCD or VCD we had to swith the CD every hour...
