I think he raises a good point. If sony's counter-measures are preventing piracy (and oh god please don't turn this into a homebrew vs piracy debate) in the short-run, then that's really all they need.
Say we crack this in the next two years. What then? Sony will have moved on to their next platform(s). So their efforts aren't nearly as futile as you suggest.
Not that I think drive protection is the way to go, mind you.

I hope they still do. All they do is give you a refurb of the same model. Plus, warranty = $125. I would be surprised if Sony got rid of that.
