Review on the Sony PlayStation 3
Review on the Sony PlayStation 3 –
11-18-2006,03:29 PM
After two long days in front of Wal-Mart in Florida. I managed to be one of the few lucky ones who got a hold of a PS3. My original plan was to sell, it but instead I decided to give it a shot and here is my review.
Sony PlayStation 3 60GB
We already know the specs and how it looks. Lookswise its looks awesome, bad thing about it, the moment you touch it it leaves fingerprints everywhere and it makes it look dirty.
Operating System
Its very similar to the PSP one. I haven't uploaded any pictures to check if I can change the wallpapers, but I think you should be able to. The background color changes each month like the PSP.
Web Browser
The integrated web browser, its decent. It allows you to watch video, so, youtube and myspace fans will be hooked on the browser, it also allows you to plug in a keyboard and a mouse, they weren't tested but they are in the options, so its basically there.
Backwards Compability
I didn't do much here, but I tried a few things out. I want to confirm that the Codebreaker 9.0 works perfectly with the PS3. The eject function even works properly. I only tested a few games. I tested Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance for PS2 and as for PS1 I tested Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy VII and Psychic Force and had no problems with them.
Blu-Ray Player
Alright, with the regular analog output the resolution displays at 480i and to be honest, it blows. If you can't shell out an extra 90$ to get the HDMI cable, the PS3 will, look like SHIT, on your TV. I went ahead and bought the HDMI cable for the PS3 (GameStop Brand 79.99$) and to be honest, after you get it, you will like your PS3 and your TV a lot more. I displayed in full 1080p HD and it looks amazing. The PS3 includes "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" and I bought "X-Men III: The Last Stand". I watched both movies and they look nothing short of Amazing. The only downside that the HD Quality Sound only sounds great on the English track. The other languages sound with regular Dolby 5.1.
Controllers
They are just like the dual shock, but they have an addition of the "PS" button similar to the X button in the Xbox 720 Controller. It turns the console on and off but no eject option. Feels somewhat cheap too.
Bottom Line
Great console, I expected Sony to at least throw the HDMI cable on the 60GB version of the unit. But again they want you to pay roughly 700$ in order to play the PS3 with HD. Microsoft did a better job at this, because even if you buy the HD-DVD player, you still pay less than 700$.
Hopefully, things will get better.

First, I must laugh at you paying $70 for some official HDMI cable. You can get them for like $10 at monoprice.com
Second, it's a 360, not 720.
