Revealing Japanese PS2 Sales Figures

Media Create is a company that gathers and analyzes data from the digital entertainment industry, specifically focusing on the Japanese console gaming market. They have just released sales data from the first two days of Japan's PS3 launch...

Total Hardware Sales:
81,639 PlayStation 3 Consoles Sold
60 GB: 45,774
20 GB: 35,865

GAMES:
Ridge Racer 7: 21,654
Mobile Suit Gundam: Target In Sight: 21,309
Resistance: Fall of Man: 13,545
Genji: Days of the Blade: 8,766
Sega Golf Club: 1,410

According to these figures, 14,955 people did not buy any games with their PS3 unit! One would think it's a safe bet that most of those were sold to people just looking to make a quick buck by re-selling the PS3 at inflated Ebay-type prices.

This is also bad news for Sony who NEED to sell software in order to re-coup the loss they are taking on the hardware.

It's also interesting that Ridge Racer and Mobile Suit Gundam sold more copies than Resistance. The U.S. game sales I'm sure will be quite different.

US sales will probably by 75% of the consoles being sold without games and ending up on eBay.

I'm betting there are going to be a lot of younger people eBaying consoles to get a console for free only to find that everyone else had the same idea. eBay might end up being a pretty fair price in the end due to excessive supply.

I actually do foresee so many PS3's on eBay that the price wont go much above $1000 a week or so after launch. The big money makers will be the first and last few ones to sell on eBay.

And you have to figure that whoever does eventually end up with that console will buy games for it, even if its scalper didn't buy any.

there are idiots with tons of money to burn, but i am not sure they really want to burn those money because i don't see any games right now worth for all the troubles.

most games are either on xbox360 already (those with tons of money, i am pretty sure they already have the 'box) or you can get better pictures with pc with high end system (again, they should have one already...if not in the process of upgrading)

so, ps3 won't be a hot item for concerned gamers until killer games are launched for ps3...maybe guarnteed hits like mgs4 or ff13

unlike "west", japanese seems like dislike of FPS as what i heard of the best launch game for ps3 is the resistance, but the sales figure isn't really good...even worse than ridge racer which has been always mediocre imo

i think the "revolutionary" sixaxis controller isn't helping the sale as it lacks vibration, so ps2/ps games would be...so so. maybe, sony can add umd drive for psp games on ps3

to justify the cost of 600usd, sony needs to show the willingness to support ps3 linux otherwise many potential buyers will be turned off...or they can slash the price by 50%
