Wow, old model gets hacked and almost conveniently about 2 weeks later, the very version that gets hacked gets remotely disabled. I don't think its a bug, I think they are forcing everyone to update to a firmware that has the fix for the hack.

Now, that makes sense. Along with the theory that having the Ethernet cable connected allowed for sabotage from Sony

You know, I love conspiracy theories.

But, it happens even if you don't have the "ethernet cable" connected.

Yep, conspiracy theories, are fun. -- Here is some of mine!

#1: If Sony decides it is firmware fix, and then claims they have to remove "other os" as that is the other thing that is not on the "Slim" models, firmware wise!

#2: If Sony forces people to send if their machines even if the fix is for free, to be able to remove all PS2 support!

But this blog writer has most of the confirmed facts so far:

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/19039...ow_so_far.html

It is getting heavy press coverage now, might even be on CNN by now!

So Sony is going to have to fix the problem that is for sure!

It seems for now, people are going to have to be stuck playing older games that don't have "trophys" in them, as they still seem to work.

Well doing some tests, it is for sure a problem with games that have "trophy" support, the moment you try to play that game, bang your clock goes back in time to 01/01/2000 or 12/31/1999, you get the error message display, the trophies for that game get deleted, and your save file becomes corrupted for that game!

Reseting the clock does not work, just goes back again, removing the battery does not help, once you get that error message, you are into the Sony frying pan of Glitch-Land!

The best thing is hopefully wait until Sony issues a firmware update, and don't use your PS3 until they do. -- Or if you are going to use your PS3, just play movies on it, or play really old games with no "trophy" support in them.

Does not seem to be anything to do with PSN, as I got machines here with no PSN account which does this on, and never see internet on it.

It is for sure a firmware bug related to the handling of "trophys" as to why it started now, people are still claiming the "leap-year" bug, but I think that is just because it was so close to the change-over when it started getting reported.

I've been playing FFXIII and other games with trophies and there's nothing wrong with my system.

The only odd thing is that I don't put it online for about two weeks.

This is why I believe this is related to the PSN STORE site and obviously it has to do with the trophy system as well.

I have a 60gb Pal ps3 which hasnīt been online for over a year. itīs still on FW 2.3
All I did was turn on the console and I got the DEC 31, 1999.
So right now I am believing the 2k+10 bug theory

Latest update by Sony on their EU blog! -- No update on the US sites!

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3. We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

    Errors include:

    * The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.

    * When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.

    * When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game.”

    * When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”

    * Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours.

In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, Please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologise for any inconvenience caused.

For the latest status on this situation please check either PlayStation.Blog, Twitter or PlayStation.com.
Again, Sony is still claiming it is PSN error, but what about the dozens of machines that have never been online, older firmwares, and they don't work!

And, Sony is still of course happy that the Slim is working fine, so just don't use your older model they are telling customers for now!

The latest conspiracy theories is that Sony is just waiting it out for the next 12 hours, because if it is bug in the older "RTC ARM SYSCON CPU", which is found in older batches of some PS3's but not in newer models, it will auto-correct itself on or before at the very latest on March 3, 2010 and then they can pat themselves on the back for fixing it without doing anything.

And for now, it seems removing the battery does infact fix the problem, as long as you remove it long enough for the system to ask for the time upon startup, but fixing the time manually on the XMB does not work, it like the old CMOS bugs in early PC motherboards.

Problem is, on some machines the battery is not easy to remove, on most it is a simple plug, but alot of the older models have the battery on the underside, so you need to remove alot of screws and flip your system board over, on other models it is worse it is in a plastic holder which you can only reach by removing the heatshield and L-clamps, meaning you need to re-apply the heatsink compound.
