On there site, theres a lot of people having problems... So if you're able to get it working in Win 7, then please tell us how...
1. Use the installer on the ps3mfw.com site.
2. put your keys in %userprofile%\ps3keys (the installer creates it empty for you.)
3. run the exe installed on the start menu by the installer.
4. ignore people saying to put them in .ps3 keys... windows won't let you make that directory from explorer.

To add some additional documentation, apparently the compiled fail0verflow tools are looked for in the "tools" directory, itself in the ps3mfw directory, instead of "ps3tools". Additionally, keys are supposed to be in /home/user/.ps3 , as opposed to /home/user/ps3keys.
Windows users of course adjust accordingly. XP users use C:\Documents and Settings\user\.ps3
Vista/7:
C:\Users\user\.ps3
This got the tool running correctly on my Debian system, though I downloaded and installed tcl/tk from source since Squeeze doesn't have the newer build this requires. They built and installed without trouble using the standard ./configure && make && sudo make install procedure.
Also, finished installing it. It works properly with me using default options.
Edit:
It may be ps3keys for Windows users, but I know for certain it's .ps3 for Linux users.

Not trying to be a pain, but your keys are missing or they are not valid ones. "... s\/pkg-key-retail " leads me to believe they aren't correct or correctly named. They are named app-ctype-XXX, etc etc. where XXX is the FW Version number.
That error is 100% the keys not found.
edit: Read right above for correct information on the tools directory, but the .ps3 info is wrong for windows --it's ps3keys.

Yea tried that ubuntu didn't wanna have anything to do with it. I'll try on windows 7 and if it doesn't do anything I'll work on it again tomorrow it's frustrating the hell out of me.
EDIT: NVM they added an installer. Sweet now I just gotta add the keys! Thanks to PS3MFW team!
EDIT2: Guys on windows use the installer. Then just paste in the keys to the directory it makes. Easy as pie! Thanks for the heads up Crash!

No, the error message actually is because the tools were built using cygwin, they must be built using mingw. Also, if the tools aren't taken from today's git, then they're too old.

I had a question (for anyone). Let's say I'm going to make a custom 3.15 firmware. I would prefer not to patch lv2. If I needed to use a lv2 patch .pkg for whatever reason, can I use the Kmeaw lv2 .pkg? I only want to use my 3.15 console for homebrew and media serving. I don't plan on using backup managers. Can I patch lv2 on the fly?
Also, I may try this on 3.01 tonight. I'll let you guys know how it goes.
Again, great work guys. I'm impressed.
the patching of lv2 only adds peek and poke, which itself allows lv2.pkg to run, without peek&poke, then lv2.pkg will not work. peek&poke allows you to do this "patch lv2 on the fly", as far as I know, it doesn't do anything else to lv2.
Also note, it hasn't been tested on 3.01. so do it at your own risks (but the basic process of patching the files should be fairly safe).

run the 'ps3mfw' file, it should be executable (it's a script). on console, just do './ps3mfw'.

Need to be in C:\Users\<your username>\ps3keys or if you're on winXP, C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\ps3keys

not really, it was dangerous when people didn't know what they were doing (that's why geohot said not to do it), example, see what happened with waninkoko's bricker.. but this should be safe though because we know what needs to be done for it not to brick.

I know this is the first release but basic install instructions goes a long way. Not everyone is a guru with open source based software implementations.
no, don't use cygwin. the basic instructions are get the installer from ps3mfw.com website, and install the keys (available in gitorious.org/ps3free/ps3keys) in C:\users\<your username>\ps3keys
Yeah, it sucks there are no instructions, I guess they'll figured people will release those soon enough.. or they forgot

no, ubuntu or whatever distro has tcl/tk 8.5.. it's a pretty old version.. ubuntu uses 8.4 by default though. it's easy enough to fix :
Code:
sudo apt-get install tcl8.5 tk8.5
sudo update-alternatives --config tclsh

keys are downloadable here : http://gitorious.org/ps3free/ps3keys...tarball/master
And I think your problem isn't the keys, it's actually the tools, you shouldn't use a version built with cygwin, you should use a version built with mingw.

the '/' is probably caused by using a cygwin-compiled tools.. people should just use the installer instead of trying to get old/bad ps3tools.

Ran flawless on Mac OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.6. Downloaded installer from official PS3MFW site.
Had to place tools and keys in /users/sean/.ps3/ or else it returns fatal error.
CFW generated with all options enabled.
Packages and everything works fine. Still need to run LVL2 enabled backup manager for your backups.
